School Foodservice Costs: Location Matters, by Michael Ollinger, Katherine Ralston

Over 42 million meals-31.2 million lunches and 11 million breakfasts-were served on a typical school day in fiscal year 2009 to children through USDA's National School Lunch and School Breakfast Programs. School food authorities (SFAs) operate local school feeding programs and deliver the meals to the schools. SFAs must serve appealing, healthful meals while covering food, labor, and other operating costs, a challenge that may be more difficult for some SFAs than for others due to differences in costs per meal across locations. Analysis of data on school costs per meal from a large, nationally representative sample reveals that geographic variation is important. In the 2002-03 school year, SFAs in the Southwestern United States had, on average, consistently lower foodservice costs per meal than did SFAs in other regions. Urban locations had lower costs per meal than did their rural and suburban counterparts. Wage and benefit rates, food expenditures per meal, and SFA characteristics such as the mix of breakfasts and lunches served each contributed to the differences in foodservice costs per meal across locations. The importance of these factors varied by location.

A perfect Christmas read with a twisty twist
By Trish @ Between My Lines
A Gift to Remember is a perfect Christmas read. As a book-lover, I really appreciated the book-mad main character and the air of mystery and intrigue kept me turning pages rapidly.

My Recap of A Gift to Remember :

Darcy while cycling to work in New York crashes into a pedestrian who loses his memory from the knock. She works hard to solve the mystery of who Mr Harris really is and in trying to work out his life, she may just come to a few realisations about her own too.

First Line of A Gift to Remember :

"Anyone who says that money can't buy happiness has clearly never been inside a bookstore."

My Thoughts on A Gift to Remember :

Darcy is so like me in lots of ways that I adored reading about her. She is obsessed with books and all things literary, she works in a fab sounding book shop in NYC and her future ambitions to run bookish walking tours around NYC just sound like so much fun. I'd love to meet Darcy in real life as I think we'd spend hours talking about all the books in our lives. But with her nose stuck in a book so much, she does at times leave real life pass her by. At night, she dreams of meeting not Mr Right but her Mr Darcy.

So when she bangs in to Mr Harris (literally!), you just know her life is going to change for the better. And Darcy sets off on a mysterious and puzzling quest as to Mr Harris's real identity. I had no idea what direction this was taking and I was kept guessing and plotting until nearly the end of the book. I wasn't expecting the twist and I loved it. I know this author is queen of the twists and every time I think, I'll get this one but I NEVER do! The award for book trickery goes to Melissa Hill yet again :O

The romance is perfect. Darcy and Mr Harris are like a match made in a book...oh wait...I forgot for a second that is what they are! They are both realistic and warm and just so genuine that I want the mushiest of scenes for them. And when Mr Harris came to the bookshop, my heart beat just those few beats faster than normal. So swoony, I felt starry eyed and had all the feels.

As always a New York location never fails to excite me. Add in a bookshop background and lots of snow and this all makes for a vibrant and romantic setting. Every chapter starts with book lover quotes or famous quotes from books and so many of them are old favourites that it was lovely to see them in this book and they all just seemed so appropriate to the storyline. And I have to mention Bailey who is Mr Harris's husky dog, I just want to hug him to death and buy him a hot dog.

Overall this book made me swoon, made me laugh, puzzled the hell out of me and gave me a fantastic few hours entertainment. I loved it and have no doubt it will be reread again in the future.

Who should read A Gift to Remember ?

If you are a fan of puzzling books with great characters and a romantic, feel-good vive then you should check this one out. It gets my 5 star stamp of approval and that isn't something I give easily.

Cheeky red herrings for the reader
By Paula Vince
Cycling to work, bookworm Darcy Archer collides with a handsome pedestrian, Aidan Harris, knocking him out cold. Feeling terrible, all she can do is take his dog under her wing after the ambulance whizzes off. When Aidan suffers temporary amnesia, she feels the least she can do is help him piece together his identity.

As she delves into their few clues, it appears he has the wealth and sportiness to match his good looks. Darcy regrets the thought of leaving his life once his memory returns. But is everything as it seems?

There are some really cheeky tricks directed at the reader. It's fun to look back at the trail of red herrings placed directly for our benefit.

Darcy herself makes this such a pleasure to read. She's so down-to-earth and sweet, content with her tiny apartment, low paying job and collection of books, even though people try to push her to sharpen up her act and be different. I love her brushes with the opulent upper-class and the conclusions she draws. It's great when a heroine helps us remain happy with just who we are.

There are a few stand-outs among the other characters too. Who can resist a hero like Aidan, devastatingly attractive but seemingly unaware of that? Bailey, the dog, is as well-drawn a 3D character as some humans I've come across. And then there's the likeable Nathaniel Cleaver-Parks Junior, the senator's son who pulled a few strings.

I actually bought this book at K-Mart on impulse, something I rarely do, and I was amazed to find the amnesia thread, as I love amnesia novels and have written one myself. It's also good when a lighthearted read can help us to start thinking about significant things.

Rights Gone Wrong: How Law Corrupts the Struggle for Equality, by Richard Thompson Ford

A New York Times Book Review Notable Book

Since the 1960s, ideas developed during the civil rights movement have been astonishingly successful in the fight against overt discrimination. But can they combat the whole spectrum of social injustice---including conditions that aren't directly caused by bigotry? In Rights Gone Wrong, Richard Thompson Ford argues that extremists on both sides of the political divide have hijacked civil rights for personal advantage, diverting our attention from serious social injustices. Is equality really served by endless litigating and legislating against every grievance or slight? Brilliantly argued, shrewd, and lively, Rights Gone Wrong offers "a crisp analysis of the limits of our civil rights laws and a prescription for how to move beyond them" (Kirkus Reviews).

Review

“Rights Gone Wrong is sharp and surprising, and casts the discrimination debate in a clarifying new light.” ―Jeffrey Rosen, The New York Times Book Review

“Ford has written a highly accessible narrative that underscores the need for Americans to roll up their sleeves and do the heavy lifting necessary to address persistent economic and racial inequality….With this book, Ford has in effect contributed a new placard to the American protest march.” ―America magazine

“Cogent…A rationalist analysis of the efficacy of a multitude of antidiscrimination laws…All sides can learn much from Ford's thinking.” ―Publishers Weekly

“Persuasive…This subject tends to produce polemical writing on both sides, but Ford is consistently measured and thought-provoking. Recommended to anyone interested in public affairs.” ―Library Journal

For a long while we were hearing that every minority child had asthma … Why was there an asthma epidemic amongst minority children? Because I’ll tell you why: the children got extra welfare if they were disabled, and they got extra help in school. It was a money racket … Now the illness du jour is autism. You know what autism is? I’ll tell you what autism is. In 99 percent of the cases, it’s a brat who hasn’t been told to cut the act out. That’s what autism is … Everybody has an illness … Stop with the sensitivity training. You’re turning your son into a girl and you’re turning your nation into a nation of losers.
On July 16, 2008, the radio talk show host Michael Savage managed to offend parents of disabled children, racial minorities, and women in less than a minute and a half—an accomplishment that his rivals Rush Limbaugh and Glenn Beck can only aspire to. The group Autism United demonstrated in front of the New York radio station that carries Savage’s program. One of his sponsors, the insurance company Aflac, promptly gave Savage some unwelcome sensitivity training: it pulled its advertising from his program, explaining that the company found “his recent comments about autistic children to be both inappropriate and insensitive.” Criticism was almost unanimous among doctors, child psychologists, disability rights advocates, parents, and pundits alike. Several local stations dropped Savage’s program in response to public outrage.
Savage is a provocateur—deliberately insulting and extreme, with a loose regard for factual accuracy. According to the clinical psychologist Catherine Lord, autism is “just like epilepsy or … diabetes or a heart condition. [Savage’s comments are] like blaming the child with a heart condition for not being able to exercise.”1 Savage eventually backpedaled, saying his remarks were “hyperbole,” designed to draw attention to the problem of fraudulent diagnosis. He agreed to devote another show to the subject so that parents of autistic children and others could air dissenting views.
Savage, like Limbaugh and Beck, is conservative and contentious, but he is also idiosyncratic—often unexpectedly thoughtful, even cerebral. While Limbaugh and Beck are activists for conservative politicians and causes, Savage is distinguished by a kind of crotchety ennui. As contemptuous of other conservatives as he is of liberals (he called Glenn Beck a “hemorrhoid with eyes”), he treats partisan politics with an aloof disdain: “You’ll have to go to one of the other talk-show hosts to get ‘Obama’s a Ma-a-arxist’ and ‘McCain is a wa-a-ar hero.’”2 As a result, where other conservative talk show hosts are annoyingly predictable, Savage’s off-the-cuff ramblings and intemperate tirades are often surprising and intriguing, and they often contain at least a grain of truth. For instance, Dr. Lord admitted that mild autism is vaguely defined and can be a catchall diagnosis for children with behavioral problems who fit no other category. A year and a half after Savage’s remarks, the psychiatrists in charge of writing the fifth edition of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders announced that they were considering folding several types of mild autism—such as Asperger’s syndrome and pervasive developmental disorder—into a single broad category—autism spectrum disorder—reflecting a new understanding that autism is not a single disorder but rather a range of conditions, from severe mental disabilities to mild emotional abnormalities that can come with extraordinary mental gifts.
There’s a professional consensus that severe autism is a discrete neurobiological condition, but mild cases can be hard to distinguish from less well-defined conditions, such as attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and other vaguely defined “learning disabilities.” Here, diagnosis is difficult and contestable, and expert opinions differ. “We’re fairly good about making the diagnosis of kids who are classically autistic, but as you move away from that specific disorder, it gets harder … [F]or kids who are of average, close to average or above average intelligence, it is difficult to sort out what is eccentricity versus what is a real social deficit,” said Dr. Lord.3
Federal law doesn’t reflect a continuum that includes mild autism and learning disabilities along with eccentricity and poor concentration. For legal purposes, a disability is a discrete condition: either you have it, and therefore have a right to an array of special concessions and extra help, or you don’t. The law doesn’t define learning disabilities with precision, but it does provide a partial definition: “a severe discrepancy between achievement and intellectual ability.”4 In practice, this means that learning disabilities are diagnosed, in large part, by identifying a gap between a child’s performance in academic settings and the performance one would expect of a child of his or her age and IQ.
Civil rights laws entitle all disabled people to special accommodations and services: a blind person might require an exam to be administered orally or written in Braille; a paraplegic might require voice-recognition software or transcription. These accommodations let the disabled reach their potential. Children with learning disabilities are also legally entitled to accommodations and services that other children are not, such as special tutoring and extra time on exams. In theory, just as a blind person needs Braille, a Seeing Eye dog, or a cane to overcome his blindness, a person with ADHD may need extra time to get organized and overcome his inability to concentrate.
But there are some important differences between severe disabilities like blindness and milder learning and behavioral disabilities. First, conspicuous disabilities often trigger reflexive animus or prejudice. Many employers wrongly assume disabled people can’t work, and businesses discriminate against them because of squeamishness and irrational aversion. A business that refuses to accommodate a disabled person might secretly wish to exclude him. Milder disabilities don’t trigger such reflexive prejudice because, for the most part, they are not conspicuous: typically an employer learns of a learning or an emotional disability only when an employee seeks an accommodation for it. Second, most of the accommodations that people with severe disabilities need wouldn’t help a nondisabled person at all. A sighted person wouldn’t benefit from having an exam written in Braille; an able-bodied person wouldn’t get much of an edge from using voice-recognition software or a professional transcriber. By contrast, people with learning and emotional disabilities often enjoy extra time on competitive exams, costly one-on-one tutoring, and exemptions from discipline for disruptive behavior—things that would benefit anyone. Finally, unlike blindness or a physical disability, many learning disabilities are hard to define objectively; as Dr. Lord admits, they are on a continuum with ordinary “eccentricity.” Put these together and you have a recipe for gaming the system: no one would suggest that an eccentric person with a wandering mind has a right to extra time on a timed exam, but someone with ADHD does—and the two can be hard to distinguish. This doesn’t suggest that civil rights for people with mild cognitive disabilities are a “racket,” but it does suggest that they have the potential to encourage opportunism and can lead to unwarranted advantages.
Suppose two children achieve low scores on a competitive timed exam: one has a diagnosed learning disability, and the other doesn’t. Suppose both of the children’s scores would improve dramatically if they had extra time to complete the exam. Is it fair to give one student extra time and not the other? Maybe. In theory, the extra time isn’t an advantage for the person with a learning disability; it’s just the way he copes with his disability. But if the disability is on a continuum with garden-variety poor concentration, then in fairness anyone with poor concentration should be entitled to extra time in proportion to the severity of his concentration deficit. This would, of course, defeat the purpose of a timed exam, which is to test not only skills and knowledge but also the ability to perform quickly.

The Harvard medical student Sophie Currier became a heroine to advocates of breast-feeding in 2007 when she demanded and eventually won the right to a breast-pumping break during a medical licensing exam. No hothouse flower, Currier first took the exam—widely considered to be one of the most challenging of all professional qualification exams—when eight months pregnant and came just short of a passing score. Currier chose to nurse her newborn baby as most experts in the medical profession she was poised to join recommend. But she still needed to pass the exam in order to start her residency at Massachusetts General in the fall. So she asked the National Board of Medical Examiners to give her a break—specifically, an extra hour each day to express and store her breast milk. The board refused, informing Currier that it would accommodate only disabilities as defined by the Americans with Disabilities Act.
Currier wasn’t the first woman to get a less-than-nurturing reaction to her nursing. Until recently, nursing an infant in public was considered indecent exposure and could result in citation or even arrest. Businesses and employers not only refused to accommodate nursing mothers but often deliberat...

An excellent book, novel in approach and clearly written
By Book lover -Philadelphia
From the first words of the introduction, author and law professor Richard Ford is crystal clear in his arguments, accurate in his analyses of racial incidents of the past and tells a fascinating tale. As the main part of the book develops, there are many more references to landmark legal cases, something that this retired lawyer enjoyed but that may not be everyone's cup of tea. For serious readers, it presents a novel thesis very well. Overall, it is an exceptionally well-written book and worth reading. Given the topic, it could also be a marvelous choice for book clubs and discussions as it is very likely to provoke lively discussions.

Recommended for the reader who wants a serious book that will provoke thought on a major issue of our times.

Hmmm...
By M. Heiss
I am a fan of Richard Thompson Ford's "The Race Card" The Race Card: How Bluffing About Bias Makes Race Relations Worse.

I am not sure this book is as carefully written as the other. It seems to start from a place of fundamental sympathy with feel-good liberalism -- with saying the right thing, with having good intentions, regardless of results. But the book never makes the connection to recognize the contradictions of liberal policies. Maybe it's time to consider whether liberals AREN'T the good guys, the ones with the good ideas -- maybe that would explain the continuing struggle of black Americans for social and economic equality. Liberals convince blacks to be dependent on government for the solutions to problems. Look around.

The book develops some good points:
+ Do racial disparities justify quotas? (p 118)
+ Where do rights come from? (p 224 -- rights are a moral entitlement)
+ How did "civil rights" become "self-esteem rights?" (p. 139, 157)
+ What are the trade-offs in demanding "rights" as opposed to working to change minds? (p. 63, 243)
+ How does the Law of Unintended Consequences explain how demanding rights makes the problem it was meant to solve ... worse? (p. 14, 68, 73)

Walter Williams has more internally consistent arguments in his book "Race and Economics." I recommend it. Race & Economics: How Much Can Be Blamed on Discrimination? (Hoover Institution Press Publication)

rights written correctly
By k d richards
"Rights Gone Wrong" is the second book by this author I have read and my opinion of his writing style and his intellect could not be higher. This book is a joy to read in spite of (because of?) the seriousness of the topic.
His dissection of what civil rights laws were intended to do versus the unintended consequenses that have happened instead should give anyone pause that is pushing for more laws to deal with perceived rights issues. For that matter, explaining the difference between rights and inconveniences was done extremely well.
For instance, laws on the books to make sure older job applicants have an equal chance to get hired for any job. Noble? Perhaps, but when was the last time you heard of a lawsuit because an older applicant did not get hired? You hear all the time of suit being brought because an older worker was let go from a job. So, the law protects older workers that have a job, not so much for one that doesn't. Plus, is this really a "civil right" to be hired because you are older?
Each chapter is filled with like examples, including the final chapter with his suggestions on how rights could be handled differently and better. Hopefully, this book could start discussions that could lead to actual solutions rather than leaving it up to courts to try to make sense of laws written.
One last thing, if there ever was a write in campaign for a new Supreme Court Justice, Richard Thompson Ford would be my first choice.

My Lunches with Orson: Conversations between Henry Jaglom and Orson Welles, by Peter Biskind

BASED ON LONG-LOST RECORDINGS, A SET OF RIVETING AND REVEALING CONVERSATIONS WITH AMERICA'S GREAT CULTURAL PROVOCATEUR

There have long been rumors of a lost cache of tapes containing private conversations between Orson Welles and his friend the director Henry Jaglom, recorded over regular lunches in the years before Welles died. The tapes, gathering dust in a garage, did indeed exist, and this book reveals for the first time what they contain.

Here is Welles as he has never been seen before: talking intimately, disclosing personal secrets, reflecting on the highs and lows of his astonishing career, the people he knew―FDR, Winston Churchill, Charlie Chaplin, Marlene Dietrich, Laurence Olivier, David Selznick, Rita Hayworth, and more―and the many disappointments of his last years. This is the great director unplugged, free to be irreverent and worse―sexist, homophobic, racist, or none of the above― because he was nothing if not a fabulator and provocateur. Ranging from politics to literature to the shortcomings of his friends and the many films he was still eager to launch, Welles is at once cynical and romantic, sentimental and raunchy, but never boring and always wickedly funny.

Edited by Peter Biskind, America's foremost film historian, My Lunches with Orson reveals one of the giants of the twentieth century, a man struggling with reversals, bitter and angry, desperate for one last triumph, but crackling with wit and a restless intelligence. This is as close as we will get to the real Welles―if such a creature ever existed.

From Booklist
When his first film, Citizen Kane, was released, Welles had already achieved fame in theater and radio. He followed Kane with several masterpieces, including The Magnificent Ambersons (1942) and Touch of Evil (1958) and was famous as Harry Lime in The Third Man (1949). By the 1980s, his films already classics, he hadn’t made a new film in nearly a decade, making it impossible to get funding for future projects, which led to lending his voice to wine commercials. Dining frequently with filmmaker Henry Jaglom, Welles allowed him to record their conversations. These recordings reveal Welles, the raconteur, as he recalls lovers (Rita Hayworth, Lena Horne); disses actors and directors (John Houseman, Joan Fontaine, Chaplin); tells outlandish stories (Carole Lombard’s plane was shot down by Nazi agents in America); and bemoans lack of respect from his peers. He is unguarded in his comments, revealing a vain, prickly personality, uncompromising and brilliant. Film buffs will find Welles’ commentary endlessly fascinating, though the director’s fans might be saddened to see him as a washed-up has-been. A worthy addition to the Bogdanovich, Leaming, and Callow accounts of Welles. --Ben Segedin

Review

“Addictive and entertaining.” ―Vanity Fair

“Welles was obviously uninhibited by the invisible tape recorder. The book is a trove of classic-era Hollywood gossip, but if it were only that, it would be, at best, candy. Instead, it's a treasure, both as a portrait of the artist and as a copious record of his ideas--it is, in fact, a key source for understanding Welles, the director and the man.” ―Richard Brody, The New Yorker

“If it wasn't bad enough that I--and every other director--have to compete historically with Orson as a filmmaker, now we have to compete with him as a pure storyteller and a true raconteur, a man whose breadth of knowledge and experience may never be equaled again in this industry. The good news is that his declamations on every subject are alternatively penetrating, illuminating, shocking, rude, funny, true, or all of the above. I read this in one sitting; I can't imagine anyone doing otherwise.” ―Steven Soderbergh, director of Side Effects

“My Lunches with Orson offers the experience of sitting in on a particular historical-cultural moment. Read with your Netflix on hand, as Welles's wealth of knowledge inspires re-viewings of both his own films and those of his favorite actors like Buster Keaton and Carole Lombard.” ―The Christian Science Monitor

“A wonderfully fluid peek into Welles' mind. Rich with acerbic observations about cinema, theater, filmmakers, actors, politics and the essence of storytelling, My Lunches With Orson might be the elephantine storyteller's last great work.” ―Indiewire

“It's time to add another line of adjectives to our descriptions of Orson Welles. In this remarkable collection of conversations, we come upon Welles the conversationalist provocateur who can't open his mouth without saying something outrageously funny, fiercely opinionated, and always off-center about the men and women he claims to have known, played with, worked for, slept with, been courted and betrayed by, and admired or detested (often simultaneously) during his half century in show business. I laughed so hard I had an asthma attack.” ―David Nasaw, author of The Patriarch

“We don't often get close to a legend, but here we have lunch with one week by week, in the last years of his life. Welles's conversations with Henry Jaglom glitter with memory, intelligence, and malice, and above all offer a magnificent act of self-impersonation: Orson Welles playing Orson Welles.” ―Michael Wood, author of Film: A Very Short Introduction

“When Henry Jaglom sent me the galleys, I was skeptical about their entertainment value. But as soon as I picked them up, I was hooked. Welles was an ornery, sometimes unpleasant genius, but his opinions on just about everything and everyone were unvarnished. You can almost hear the silverware clinking and the waiters delivering lunch as the likes of Richard Burton drop by to pay their respects…For those not fortunate enough to have Hollywood running through their family tree, this book may be the next best thing.” ―Ralph Gardner Jr., The Wall Street Journal

Good conversation
By Glenn Hopp
People who have read Peter Bogdanovich's THIS IS ORSON WELLES will want to read this book, too. Less a series of intentional interviews, it is, as the title tells, transcriptions of informal table talk at lunch. Welles insisted that the tape recorder be out of sight so that the conversations could be as unselfconscious as possible, and the results are nothing if not candid and opinionated--but also stimulating and insightful. Anyone who has seen an interview with Welles knows what a spellbinding talker he was, and every one of the book's 27 chapters verifies this, nearly every one of the 286 pages. The conversations all come from the last three years of Welles's life.

The overall picture that we get is mostly personal. As one might expect in lunching with a friend, there's gossip, personal opinions, remarks about his current projects, even comments on mid-80's current events (the death of Tennessee Williams, the fear of catching AIDS from casual contact). Sometimes other people (Richard Burton, Jack Lemmon) drop by their table (Welles is rude to Burton, kind to Lemmon). A representative snippet from the book is these sentences about Welles's friend from the Forties, the actress Carole Lombard. He tells Jaglom that Lombard swore freely in an age when the daily discourse was more reserved: "My God, she was earthy. She looked like a great beauty, but she behaved like a waitress in a hash house. That was her style of acting, too, and it had a great allure." The gossip of the first two sentences becomes in the last sentence a smart point about Lombard's art. That happens a lot in the book, as I suppose it could at the lunch tables of America every day: what starts off as dishing dirt transforms into something intelligent. With Orson Welles talking, this change seems to happen much more often, of course.

It would be a mistake not to mention that most of the names and topics arising in the book concern people that Welles views with much less nostalgia and fondness than he held for Carole Lombard. No one in Welles's comments probably fares worse than Laurence Olivier and John Houseman, but he is not one to moderate his opinions, and the opinions can get fairly blunt and blistering. Still, it's a book no one curious about Welles as a person and an artist will want to overlook.

Dazzler
By Steve Schwartz, Austin
For years, actor/director Henry Jaglom hung out with film legend Orson Welles, not only having lunches, but hustling for him and his projects. With Welles's consent, Jaglom taped their conversations by means of a tape recorder hidden in Jaglom's bag.

Unlike filmmakers Hitchcock and Ford, for example, Welles was never able to parley his genius for making some of the best films to come out of Hollywood (or anywhere else) into a flourishing career. Early on, he got tagged by the screw-ups of others -- studio executives, jealous colleagues, government cultural bureaucrats in Europe, small-minded know-it-alls in general -- as a man who could never finish anything, despite considerable evidence to the contrary. The word on Welles, as well as his corporal image of self-indulgence, made it difficult and finally imossible to get financing for any project. At the time of his death, he had 19 scripts, many complete, a few not, including what might have been a great King Lear. It's definitely our loss, but there's always the next witless movie franchise (Fast and Furious XXI, for example) all too available to take up brain space. I never really understood why some billionaire wouldn't just give him 5 mil to make a film, even if the project turned to powder. It still would have been money better spent than on a giant party in the Bahamas catered by the trendiest celebrity chef and adorned with ice sculptures.

Unlike many who called Welles a friend, Jaglom actually went out of his way to be of practical service to Welles's career, shopping Welles's scripts and even casting him in Someone to Love, Welles's last film appearance. Why, especially when most people were more than willing to accept Welles as a talentless sprawl (Welles had passed "obese" decades before) of failure?

Jaglom doesn't tell us, but rather allows Welles to reveal himself as a fascinator of endless charm, a superb storyteller and raconteur, and a fellow with a boy's old-fashioned sense of adventure. "Larger than life" may be a cliche, but it fits Welles, even when you ignore his girth. Welles's personality dwarfed almost any other contemporary, recalling somebody like Dickens. As Welles himself showed in his brilliant F for Fake, he had a "fluid relationship" with facts, I suspect mainly to improve the story he told. The anecdotes, as he brings them out, instantly stick to your memory. I've been relaying to my poor wife one Welles story after another. They're so good, you want to tell *somebody*. That's the price she has to pay for living with me.

You'll learn about Joseph Cotten and Deanna Durbin, Irving Thalberg's tremendous influence on the "film factory" system and how it tended to crowd out the better directors, Laurence Olivier's stupefying narcissism, the reasons behind John Barrymore's drinking, the bat-dip crazy far right in Hollywood (Adolph Menjou, Hedda Hopper, formerly liberal Charlton Heston), and much more. There are affectionate portraits of Welles's friends and his love of good actors, especially the ones who helped him. One also finds frank considerations of his directing competitors. I expected to find the latter, not merely because of Welles's self-absorption, but because of his very individual sensibility. Nobody, after all, likes everything. Why should Welles?

To some extent, there's a bit of score-settling as well. Probably the three most influential Welles detractors, those responsible for the "self-indugent failure" myth -- Charles Higham, John Houseman, and Pauline Kael -- finally get solid pushback. I never liked Higham's book on Welles. It seemed both intellectually shoddy and badly written. Given what I know of its genesis -- Higham underpaid a bunch of research assistants and threw together their index cards -- Welles's antipathy didn't shock me. The book repeated long-debunked myths, went to hostile sources, and in general didn't engage with Welles's films themselves. About John Houseman, who owed his career to Welles, I never found much to admire. His acting seemed less like acting and more like an amateur "turn." To be fair, I didn't know any other part of his work. Here, he comes across as an Iago -- malice without sufficient reason, concealing the poison in the honey of "more in sorrow than in anger."

To me, the strongest anti-Wellesian is Pauline Kael -- I have to admit, my favorite film critic. Indeed, she turned me on to late Welles. I saw the wonderful Chimes at Midnight on her recommendation. Aside from her incredible smarts and great prose, she never gives you the sense that she cuts intellectual corners, like Higham does. Unlike Houseman, she doesn't trade in innuendo but sets out the facts as she knows them. The main charge she levels is that Welles didn't, as he claimed, write the script of Citizen Kane and that he reduced the writing credit of Herman J. Mankiewicz to co-writer. Kael contends that Mankiewicz was responsible for most of the script and should have gotten full credit, and she argued that the egotistic Welles tried to obscure Mankiewicz's contribution. Welles simply points to obvious facts. Mankiewicz received at least part writing credit, and Welles never hid his debt to Gregg Toland, indeed often referred to him as a co-director. So much for the raving egotist. Kael did the most damage with her claim that Welles tried to remove Mankiewicz's screenplay credit completely with a cash payment to the latter. Scholarship has since found evidence to support Welles's claim that he rewrote Mankiewicz's work, and it fits with Welles's practice in other films, even the ones in which he only acted.

Peter Birskind has done a great job putting the mess of conversation into readable, even entertaining form. The great feature of this book is that almost all of the stuff above comes in by the way and that a picture gradually builds up, almost by stealth. Mainly, you just enjoy being at the table with a figure so effervescent and Falstaffian.

Interesting but a bit tedious
By William D. Curnutt
The first portion of the book is a brief history of Orson Wells life and work in the movie business. It also chronicles several other film makers. It is a good brief history of the industry and fairly interesting. If you love the movie business you will certainly enjoy this small short stroll down memory lane.

The main body of the book is a detail structure of the conversations between Jaglom and Wells. While interesting at times it is also a difficult tedious read at times due to the nature of the relationship between the two and their familiarity with each other. Think about a good friend of yours and how when you get together your talks wind their way through a multitude of topics, and something you say has deep meaning for you and your friend where others not privileged to your life would find it difficult to catch the nuance. I found this book that way. The discussions have some poignant insights but often they are tedious, such as the dialogue between Orson and the waiter who obviously have known each other a while but you are left thinking the waiter is either a mind reader or just plain snarky.

If you are a huge Orson Wells fan then you will enjoy this dialogue. If not, then you will find points interesting but it a bit hard and long to get through the text.

Review

"Debut novelist Roehrig peoples his sensationalistic, twisty mystery with credible characters, especially narrator Flynn, whose struggles with coming out will resonate with young gay teens in more mundane circumstances. Witty, realistically foulmouthed dialogue and the suspenseful, well-laid mystery will keep pages turning... Readers won't be able to put it down."--Kirkus Reviews, starred review

"This truly hair-raising, stand-out mystery thriller from debut author Roehrig will keep readers guessing, even until the end."--Booklist, starred review

"The characters are believable, the mystery is interesting, and the action is often fast-paced. Flynn’s internal struggle to open up about his sexuality carries weight, and readers will be drawn into his emotional journey and his adventures in amateur sleuthing...A fun mystery with a credible emotional pull." -- School Library Journal

Last Seen Leaving will sink its claws into you and not let go until you turn the final page.
By Melissa @ BookNerdMomo
Last Seen Leaving had me riveted from the very first line to the very last. It was gripping and full of twists that not only had me gasping out loud at times but had me second guessing everything I was thinking at every possible turn. I was on the edge of my seat! I kept trying to come up with theories about who did what, what would happen, and what had happened – I was wrong every single time (and I enjoyed that aspect). As far as my first experience with the mystery/thriller genre (when it comes to books) is concerned I would say that this was a raving success. I thoroughly enjoyed it, it was unforgettable, and probably one of the best books I’ve read this year!

This book, as stated in the synopsis, is about Flynn’s girlfriend January having vanished and the mystery surrounding her disappearance. It’s a mystery that Flynn is desperate to solve and the reader is whisked away on this dark and twisted journey with him. As he begins to uncover secrets that January kept hidden he is forced to face his own secret alongside those revelations. Last Seen Leaving is Flynn’s own personal journey as well – his journey of acknowledging who he really is and learning to accept and embrace it. In a nutshell, while the reader is gripped in the claws of this haunting tale they also get to see the transformation Flynn goes through in terms of his sexuality (which is made pretty obvious straight away). That journey of self-discovery brings with it an unexpected romance that I won’t go into detail about but it was incredible and I loved it.

Caleb Roehrig wove so many different layers and stories into this book and it was enchanting and incredibly well done. Combine that with his writing that was practically spellbinding and you have a book that is impossible to put down.

I feel like this was equal parts character driven and plot driven. There is a cast of very colorful characters in this book – some are horrible and you’ll hate them and some you’ll adore or end up adoring. I won’t go into detail about the characters because to do so would spoil everything.

I will say that I, obviously, adored Flynn and his journey. He was a funny, sarcastic, and charming character who, despite everything, is probably the person who cared for January the most and would do anything if it meant she was found and safe.

January was so complex and at times I wasn’t sure how I felt about her but ultimately I ended up respecting her more than any of the other characters.

And don’t even get me started on Kaz! I won’t give away anything but he was my favorite and I loved him.

This is one of those times where I will be as vague as possible in a review because I went into this book blind and I believe it’s better if you do that. I wouldn’t have had such a strong reaction nor would I have been as riveted if I would have known any specifics that were not already common knowledge beforehand.

However, I do want to point out that this book is a dark book. It does have light moments but at its core, Last Seen Leaving has a very realistic and scary vibe to it. The topic of rape is broached, there is violence, gruesome scenes, and a lot of bad things happen. The reason I’m pointing that out is because I know there are people that might not want to be blindsided by certain things in a book.

That aside, Last Seen Leaving will sink its claws into you and not let go until you turn the final page. There are so many twists that leave you guessing and a shocker of an ending that will have you picking your jaw up off the floor.

Another auto-buy author for me as I definitely can’t wait to see what Caleb Roehrig has in store for us with his future books.

Definitely one of my favorite debuts of 2016!
By Julie
LAST SEEN LEAVING is definitely one of my favorite debuts of 2016!
Many people will talk about this book because it is an engrossing thriller that keeps you turning pages, and many more will praise it because it is an honest, compelling coming-of-age story. For me, the thing that sets this book apart in a league all its own is the way it manages to be both these things at once, and shows that the whole is greater than the sum of its parts. Roehrig has taken an edge-of-your-seat thriller loaded with secrets about what happened to a missing girl, and seamlessly woven it together with the story of a young man whose life is crowded with secrets of his own. This is a book where the main character is asking "who done it" while simultaneously asking "who am I," and the themes are layered and intertwined so expertly. The mystery is all the stronger juxtaposed against Flynn's personal journey, and I could not stop turning pages. I laughed out loud, cried a little, and loved every page all the way up to the satisfying ending. This is a fantastic debut and I can't wait for whatever Caleb Roehrig writes next!

I was enthralled reading this
By Kelsey Rodkey
Last Seen Leaving by Caleb Roehrig is thought-provoking, beautiful, heartbreaking, and a rollercoaster ride of fiction, both emotionally and mentally. The book takes readers on a journey of self-discovery, along with discovery of other people, the secrets they keep and the darkness that lies within them. My only grievance is that the characters are so young. Fifteen is usually a turn-off when I'm reading YA, and a lot of the internal dialogue was insightful and verbose, unlike what I'd expect of a teenage boy, but I really enjoyed it nonetheless.

Roehrig did an excellent job of shaping a character that was not only complex, but intriguingly so when it came to January. She is never actually in the story, only developed through memories, but that doesn't matter. I ached for this girl, wanted her to be found, to be all right, and that's quite the feat to accomplish when she never truly graces the pages outside of Flynn's mind. As for Flynn himself, he is annoyingly likable and determined. I was cheering for both him and January throughout the whole story despite predictable twists and turns. I NEEDED them to prevail in the end. I needed everything to be okay.

But speaking of predictable twists and turns, I use that phrase lightly. While I did call the reveal near the end very early on while reading, I never fully committed to my guess until just before it was revealed. I willingly and gladly succumbed to many false leads, just as the author intended me to, but I enjoyed the ride regardless. The ending left my emotions so confused (am I happy? am I sad?) but, once again, it doesn't matter. All these feelings are great to have because what I just read, what I feel like I experienced, was such a complex thing.

Overall, it's a dark, suspenseful, hold-your-breath-and-can't-put-it-down kind of read that I highly recommend.
