Gr 10 Up—In this lyrical and romantic coming-of-age tale of friendship, rebellion, and identity, McCarry has penned a prequel to her debut, All Our Pretty Songs (St. Martin's Griffin, 2013). Teenage Maia, a gifted pianist, has lived a sheltered life under the eye of her watchful mother, while Cassie, a free-spirited runaway, exists without rules or boundaries. When the two meet, an all-consuming friendship sparks between them, as Cassie urges Maia to shed her constricted existence in favor of Cassie's more decadent lifestyle: punk rock concerts, goth outfits, and boys. The narrative leaps forward and backward in time, focusing on two periods: Maia and Cassie as they first meet ("Then") and after they've run off together ("Now"). Though the book is presented as a retelling of the myth of Persephone and Demeter, it's a very loose reshaping that readers who aren't paying close attention to the clues—or who aren't familiar with Greek mythology—may easily miss. While the trope of the innocent girl longing for escape and adventure isn't new, the characters are well developed, and Maia and Cassie have strong voices. McCarry's hauntingly beautiful, darkly poetic language is her strength, and a sense of magical realism pervades the narrative throughout, hinting at danger lurking on the periphery. Lots of unanswered questions

Dirty Wings is told in both a past and present tense, narrated by both the 'innocent' Maia, and the 'bad girl' Cass. Both of their characters undergo significant character growth in the novel- but seem to have no reason for doing so- except for it being the authors intended purpose. The story itself was advertised as a modern Persephone story, this is not the case at all and the story more so revolves around a coming of age theme, and a blossoming unusual friendship. McCarry while a below par author in some aspects, brings a good sense of out of the worldliness to her novel as well as an extraordinary amount of detail.
The book itself follows piano prodigy, Maia as she discovers there's a world outside the one shes been living in thanks to the help of her new best friend, Cass. On their adventure Maia discovers different forms of love- both with Cass and her boyfriend turned husband, Jason. Cass in a similar fashion experiences real love for the first time with Maia. Cass also develops her 'supernatural powers' when she starts seeing a mysterious pale skinned man in her dreams.
The Good- It's a good coming of age novel, and the friendship between Cass and Maia is truly inspiring as well as the different themes of love explored in the novel. McCarry has a lovely writing style and is very knowledgeable about the different topics she is writing about.
The bad- All of the characters in the novel that are not Maia and Cass are severely underdeveloped and boring. The mysterious man in the novel leaves the reader with a lot of questions (Is he our Hades? Is it Jason? Or Cass?) especially at the end of the novel. The book also has a strange pace to it and the time jumps from past to present are a little confusing and unnecessary. It wasn't until I reached the end of the book and reading the acknowledgments was it made mention that this novel was part of a sequel (this one was a prequel) and while it did a fairly good job as a stand alone prior knowledge would probably help a lot.
Overall it's worth a read if you like these kind of books- but it's not worth buying at all with the twisted plot and unanswered questions.

The characters of Maia and Cass are amazingly complex, and their friendship is equally so.

Although the story of the "good girl gone bad" may be a bit played out at this point, it seems to work effortlessly in Sarah McCarry's DIRTY WINGS.It's essentially the story of two 17-year-old girls, each lost in her own way, who find solace in one another. Maia is the picturesque suburban princess who, like many of her kind, was cursed with a dreadfully narrow idea of both her life and the world around her. She is on a straight path to what her pretentious mother and overwhelmingly embittered piano teacher call "success," all the while completely oblivious to what she really wants. Fortunately, she meets Cass, a tough, street-smart rug rat of a girl who's been through more than most teenagers can imagine. When these two fractured souls unite, they feel an undeniable pull towards each other. Maia learns more from Cass in a few months than she's learned throughout her entire life. Soon, they become as thick as thieves (literally), and Maia has become an entirely different person both inside and out.
Obviously, this isn't just some happy-go-lucky story of two unlikely friends. Sure enough, obstacles arise, including Cass's reoccurring dreams of a skeleton man with eyes as black as night, and a dreamy young rocker boy who seems to have his piercing blue eyes set on ripping Maia from Cass's grasp. What exactly does this skeleton man want? I don't know. And will rocker boy succeed? I don't know that either. The book ends with a cliffhanger that leaves the reader dying to know the rest of Cass and Maia's story.
Overall, I really enjoyed this book. DIRTY WINGS is a prequel to ALL OUR PRETTY SONGS, and I cannot WAIT to read that book. The characters of Maia and Cass are amazingly complex, and their friendship is equally so. The writing is exquisite --- it is descriptive but not too heavy. Also, the alternating chapters told the story in an interesting and creative way. So in short, if you're looking for a quick read with sex, drugs and rock and roll (with a little classical mixed in), then this is the book for you.

Answered questions I didn't even know I had!

Dirty Wings answered questions from All Our Pretty Songs that I didn't even know I had! I mean that in a good way; it addressed situations and issues that I didn't realize were so meaningful in the first book, giving it much deeper layers. Though it seemed less fantastical than the debut, Dirty Wings was definitely an important chapter in the overall story and helped ground two characters that were more secondary in the previous book. Though this book could be read as a standalone, the experience will be much richer if you read both. This prequel novel was so good that it made me dig out the previous book so I could give it another once over.
Cass and Maia were the mothers of the main characters in All Our Pretty Songs and we learned a little about them and their strained friendship, but not much about their history. Dirty Wings is their story and the events here lay the groundwork for the previous book. Maia was a sheltered piano prodigy -- adopted and provided for but never certain if she was actually loved. Cass was a runaway, scraping by on the streets. You wouldn't think they had anything in common, but a decision to steal away one summer created a lifetime friendship. As Maia ran from her parents, their expectations, and her music, Cass was just content to be with her. They have a pretty idyllic summer, going from concert-to-concert, beach-to-beach, and popping pill after pill. They are happy and carefree and secure in their friendship until Jason appears and draws Maia away. Now Cass is on the outside looking in and she can't help feeling jealous. One bad choice could cause her to lose everything that she loves...
I loved following the developing friendship and love between Maia and Cass. Though they were from completely different worlds, they were both searching for somewhere to fit, someone to love them. Dirty Wings tells the story of their burgeoning friendship, but it also skips ahead to the end of the story and shows us why Maia and Cass' relationship ends up combusting.
Maia has never had the opportunity to live her own life. She's always spent her time fulfilling someone else's ideals. Cass allows her to be herself and to explore the edges of her comfort without judgement. Cass grounds her and saves Maia from her personal darkness. Cass has toughened herself to avoid pain and thinks her shell makes her bulletproof, but Maia's friendship shows her she is still vulnerable. Maia's love gives her self-worth and Cass' devotion to Maia gives her something good in her life.
When Jason enters the picture in Dirty Wings, he upsets the beautiful balance Maia and Cass have created. He claims Maia's love for his own and Maia is swept away in the moment. Once the shine begins to dim, you can see that Maia never truly abandoned Cass but their relationship has become strained. Cass is still the most important person in her life, even Jason sees that and is threatened by it, but Cass feels like she has to let Maia go. Maia has grown and blossomed into her own person and, even though she would never admit it, Cass has been changed by Maia's love. They are moving forward together but experiencing it in different ways and that scares Cass into making some not so great decisions.
Dirty Wings has the same gorgeous, lush prose as All Our Pretty Songs , but the mystical elements are a little more tame here. We are introduced to the entity we will come to know as Minos, but here he regulates himself mostly to Maia and Cass' dreams. Though he does materialize more fully toward the end of the book, we know that it is only possible because of the choices Cass made throughout the story. Cass was the pivot point for everything that happened and will happen in this fascinating and engrossing world.
