Grade 2–4—MEOW, or Memories Expressed in Our Writing, has gathered cats from all over the world for a night of storytelling. What follows are 11 tales from the diaries of various felines, some going back as far as 2000 B.C.E. (Miu, the Great Cat of Egypt, who must contend with Abu, the Royal Dog). The book has a few standout tales, such as Go-Go's story about a school visit during which he climbs the stage curtains and Whiskers's adventure with a parachute, but the majority are rather pedestrian. Still, the short chapters and whimsical illustrations that appear on almost every page will appeal to reluctant and beginning chapter-book readers. About the Author
Betsy Byars, a Newbery Medal winner, and her two daughters, Betsy Duffey and Laurie Myers―both well-known authors of books for young readers―have together written several popular story collections. Betsy Byars lives in South Carolina, and her daughters live in Georgia.
Erik Brooks has illustrated Boo's Dinosaur by Betsy Byars and Monkey Business by Shirley Climo, in addition to the first Secret Writings book, Dog Diaries. He lives in the Methow Valley in north central Washington.

The premise for children would be funny or so I thought

I decided to read Cat Diaries because well, I am a cat lover. I thought the idea of cat's having a diary in the first place sounded rather cute. The premise for children would be funny or so I thought.
Some of the stories were cute and I appreciated the humor in them but most were so-so. Also, I simply could not figure out why the book started with this big convention and then nothing but the reading of the stories by the various cats. It seemed there should have been more action or something. That was a bit disappointing.
However, one thing I did like in the book was near the end. Even though the book is targeted for 2-5 year olds, this seemed something that should have been for the older kids and even adults reading. Essentially, it called for everyone to keep writing their own stories so they are heard and known. After all, MEOW stands for "Memories Expressed in Our Writing", when we write things down, we are creating those memories to share with others about us. That makes me smile.
Overall, not a bad book and I do think young kids would like hearing the stories but it certainly is not for the youngest to read. This is not a picture book and the ages should be adjusted to an emerging reader.

Dogs still rule the Diaries

I am a big fan of Dog Diaries, so was very excited to hear that Cat Diaries was coming. It did not live up to my huge expectations though, as I felt that the stories lacked the humour and poignancy of the earlier collection. Most just fall a little flat. These seem to be aimed at a slightly younger crowd, and even though they don't seem as vibrant as the Dog Diaries, they will still have lots of appeal to young cat lovers.
There are a couple of stories here that will make for excellent read alouds for the early elementary set, most notably Go Go Goes to School and Pirate Cat, Treasure Hunter. There's plenty of opportunity there for some fun when you need to fill an extra few minutes. The story about the parachuting cat will also work well to generate some laughs.
While Cat Diaries does not quite live up to the Dog's efforts, it still stands out as a good choice for reluctant readers just beginning to get into chapter books. Just a bit disappointed, but still looking forward to some more animal diaries in the future.

Just Too Adorable

Our whole family adored this book including my 7 year old daughter and 4 year old son. The writing just draws you in completely. The stories are adorable. The authors definitely know kitties!
