The first time she saw Lost Lake, it was just a picture on a postcard, but she knew she was seeing her future. That was half a lifetime ago. Now all that's left is a once-charming collection of lakeside cabins succumbing to the Southern Georgia heat and damp, and an assortment of faithful misfits drawn back to Lost Lake year after year by their own secret dreams and desires. It's not quite enough to keep Eby Pim from selling up and calling this her final summer at the lake. Until one last chance at family knocks on her door. Kate spent her best summer at Lost Lake, at the age of twelve, before she learned of loneliness, and heartbreak, and loss. Perhaps, if she returns, her young daughter can cling to her own childhood for just a little longer...and maybe Kate herself can rediscover something that slipped through her fingers so long ago. One by one, people find their way to Lost Lake, looking for something: a second chance, a mystery solved, a heart mended. Can they find what they need before it's too late? In this atmospheric and enchanting novel, Sarah Addison Allen illuminates the secret longings and the everyday magic that wait to be discovered in the unlikeliest of places.

*Starred Review* Kate has been lingering in a fog throughout the year since her husband died, and it is only when her manipulative mother-in-law threatens to hijack her life that Kate begins to snap to. When her wardrobe-challenged eight-year-old daughter, Devin, discovers an old letter from Kate’s great-aunt Eby, the pair go on the lam to Lost Lake, Eby’s dilapidated resort camp tucked deep in the south Georgia swamplands. Long widowed, with dwindling funds and a diminishing guest roster, Eby may be forced to sell her fading haven to an unscrupulous developer, until Kate’s arrival gives her a new lease on life. While guests and townsfolk prepare a farewell send-off they hope will perversely convince her to stay, Devin receives perplexing clues from the lake’s loquacious alligator. One would need a heart of steel, or the skin of an alligator, not to fall in love with Allen’s beguiling cast of misfits. A surefire star of feel-good fiction, Allen always manages to nimbly mask her potent messages of inspiration and romance beneath her trademark touches of mirth and magic, but this endearing tale of surprising second chances may just be her wisest work yet. --Carol Haggas

Easy read

Not everything has to be intense....I loved this story, have seen comments that there is too much"magic" in these books....that's why I read, to escape from reality! Loved it as much as every other novel she has written

Captivating and Magical!
By Judith D. Collins
This was my second book by Sarah Allen Addison, as Waking Kate was my first (a novella I would highly recommend as background) for this magical and captivating story of Lost Lake!
I loved the multi-generational tie in between the different ages of the women, all with baggage and a past, making them hide behind others and some which are controlling their lives. They all have given up on their dreams for other people. It takes a little girl, some magical past moments, sacrifice, and facing the truth in order to bring new relationships to fruition. This book will make you smile and cry at the same time.
When Kate and her daughter finds this post card from her great aunt Eby, it comes at just the right time as they journey back to Lost Lake and the magical summers of long ago. Each has a special place in their heart for this Lost Lake Inn quaint property as a developer fights to take it over for new development.
First let me say, the novella pulled me in, the emotional video about this book found on Sarah Allen Addison’s website and her heartfelt story and journey with cancer, as this is her first book since her illness. What an inspiring story and so commend her for her perseverance and the time and thought it took to write this thought provoking, emotionally charged, and fabulous novel.
I have a passion for mountain and lake cabins (as when I travel, I always choose quaint cabins), as they offer privacy, solace, and the magical sounds of nature. I especially love cabins in Georgia and NC, as formerly lived in a log cabin in Big Canoe, GA, and for many years have vacationed at Mitchell Cottages in Highlands, NC, as well as the Old Creek Lodge (unfortunately, it is no longer there as the same developer of Old Edwards Inn and Spa has purchased the land to build new construction which makes us all sad as this property was magical as there and held many memories. This piece of heaven is no longer there.
Sarah thank you once for believing in magic after all you’ve been through in your personal life and for sharing this magic with your readers. We all believe in miracles; however, we sometimes get lost in the process and nice to remind us with friends and family we can survive. I highly recommend, and your hard work has not gone unnoticed. I so look forward to reading more from this author and have already added a number of her older books to my must read list.
PS. I highly recommend the audio version as the narrator, Janet Metzger was ideal for the part as so love her in other books she performs by Sherryl Woods, Patti Callahan Henry, Elin Hilderbrand, Claire Cook, etc.

So so

This was not my favorite Sarah Addison Allen book. I have read all of her previous novels and have loved them, but this one fell a bit short for me. I usually love the touch of magic she includes in her stories, but I had a hard time getting into this one. Selma's "magical gift" was gross and actually really sad. I don't think she was trying to portray Selma's gift as a good thing, but I had a hard time getting past the fact that Selma "saves the day" in the end by using her last charm to seduce a repulsive man. Getting him to sleep with her and then having him leave his family, (Even if they are grumpy shrews), is just a sad way to save the day in my opinion. I was just a little disappointed in this book. I will definitely read more books by Sarah Addison Allen, but I did not love this one.
