From the Inside Flap
NOW, AT LAST, YOU UNDERSTAND YOUR DOG
You think your life is crazy. Try looking at the world through your dog's big melting brown eyes. If your dog is neurotic (and what dog isn't these days?), consider these helpful pointers:
• Don't interrupt your dog's naps—remember, he needs your bed far more than you do.
• Don't force your dog to play fetch just because you feel like it—keep in mind his busy schedule too.
• Never bark orders at your dog. "Please" and "thank you" work wonders with the neurotic dog.
• Give your dog a canine personality quiz—it's the first step before starting him on full-fledged psychoanalysis.
• If all else fails, feed him!

Stephen Baker's delightful HOW TO LIVE WITH A NEUROTIC DOG is sure to have both you and your canine companion rolling on the floor and begging for more.

From the Back Cover

Can you cure your neurotic dog?

One of the more important relationships in your life is the one you enjoy with your dog. He is your constant companion, and his loyalty is unmatched by any other animal--or human. But no matter how much time you spend with Fido or how many rawhides you buy for him, he always seems moody, in need of constant reassurance, and overly suspicious of the cat. What can you do?

How to Live with a Neurotic Dog is like a bright red fire hydrant on an otherwise dark street. This book will help you understand your dog's idiosyncrasies, such as why your canine companion insists on squeezing between you and your partner in bed, his aversion to soap and water, and the break-neck speed at which he devours his food.

Inside, you'll find prescriptive techniques and sage advice for dealing with your pooch's quirks and calming his insecurities, such as:

  • Never buy a more expensive toy for the baby than for the dog at Christmas
  • Invite your dog to the dining table and let him know that what's yours is his and what's his is his
  • When shopping for your canine's clothes, avoid discount stores--he'll think you're cheap
  • In addition, you'll find a breakthrough method for keeping your dog off your bed.

How to Live with a Neurotic Dog may not solve your relationship problems with your four-legged friend, but at least it will keep you both laughing. Read it with a dog you love.

Kind of funny and clever. Humor is based on truth and as a dog (or cat - another book) takes over one's life, the events created by the pet causes one to smile and laugh out loud at times. The illustrations in the book help capture the essence of the verbal descriptions.

Cute book
By OAT
This is a cute book. After reading "How to Live With a Neurotic Cat," I expected this book to be as good. While it is very cute and funny it isn't as funny as the cat one. I'd recommend reading both if you are an animal lover like me.

I can truly relate
By Donna C
Read this book and you'll get an idea of what's it's like every day of my life. My cousin gave it to me for my birthday (in May), part as a gag but really because everyone knows just how cracked out my dog actually is. He's not a bad dog, he's just hiding a little doggy bag of cocaine in his crate. Even if your dog isn't as insane as mine, you'll still get a kick out of this book.
Some of the drawings, by Fred Hillard, are just absolutely hilarious and eerily relatable. All they were missing was a picture of a twelve pound MinPin stepping on a person's throat in the morning in lieu of an alarm clock. That'd be the start of my day.

Although one bit certainly hit the nail on the head-

The early riser wakes with the sun and welcomes the day with a burst of enthusiasm. He likes to share his feelings with others. Having done so, he promptly goes back to sleep.

I can't tell you how many times my little bastard's done that, not only during the week but on the weekends as well. He gets up, all excited, can't stay still, wants to get out, wants to get out, wants to get out. I let him out, feed him and start doing my thing because I'm wide freakin' awake. Where does he go? Back upstairs, under my blankets and goes back to sleep for an undetermined amount of time.
Unfortunately the book was blissfully lacking in chapters on extreme chewing (not just on the wussy chewing they broached, my dog destroys Kongs, just so you know what I'm dealing with here, and just to remind you, he's a Miniature Pinscher) and peeing on my bed out of spite. I would have liked to have known the author's take on such a dilemma. Trainers said it was his "teen" years. Yeah, well, I didn't pop a squat on my mom's bed when she wouldn't let me have the car, now did I?

Overall, a cute read, definitely worth the half hour it took for me to get through it. It's also rather therapeutic; making me laugh at my dwindling stockpile of shoes and blankets that more closely resemble Swiss cheese. It's more of an insane laugh, but a laugh nonetheless.

And now I leave you with some images of my very own neurotic dog. You can call him Malfoy . . .

No I didn't destuff my own comforter and yes, that is a bobble head Jesus my dog is chewing on. Do you have a neurotic dog?

"Mommy burned up." On a cloudy day in August 2003, Grace and Lily Pearson, 4 and 3, were flying in their uncle's plane along with their mother on their way to their grandpa's birthday party near Lake Superior, when Lily noticed the trees out the window were growing close; so close she could almost touch them. Before the trees tore into the cabin, Grace had the strange sensation of falling through clouds. A story of tragedy, survival, and justice, Falling Through Clouds is about a young father's fight for his family in the wake of a plane crash that killed his wife, badly injured his two daughters, and thrust him into a David-vs-Goliath legal confrontation with a multi-billion dollar insurance company. Blindsided when he was sued in federal court by this insurance company, Toby Pearson made it his mission to change aviation insurance law in his home state and nationally, while nursing his daughters to recovery and recreating his own life. Falling Through Clouds charts the dramatic journey of a man who turned a personal tragedy into an important victory for himself, his girls, and many other Americans.

From Booklist
In his first book, journalist Fowler delves deeply into the more arcane aspects of aviation insurance in a poignant review of an aircraft crash that devastated two midwestern families. Told from multiple perspectives and based on numerous interviews, the narrative opens just prior to the crash and then provides a near minute-by-minute account of the search and miraculous rescue of the two young survivors. The pilot and his sister-in-law are dead, her daughters alive. Grief among family members turns to shock as the medical expenses mount and the aircraft insurance company refuses to pay out on the policy. Lawyers and lawmakers become involved as the girls’ father fights to save his children and battles for what they deserve. Complicating Fowler’s David-versus-Goliath premise is the balancing act the facts force him to walk as he must both blame the pilot (whose errors caused the crash) and sympathize with his widow, who also lost her sister. Though the insurance company is an obvious villain, the story of the children’s recovery is truly stirring. --Colleen Mondor

Review

"In his nonfiction debut, magazine journalist Fowler pieces together the compelling story of Minnesota native Toby Pearson and his unfortunate ties to the crash of a noncommercial airplane that went down in the vast woodlands near Lake Superior. That small aircraft was carrying Pearson’s wife and two daughters… Fowler does a meticulous job of getting readers acquainted with Pearson and his family and providing a solid account of their lives before and after the crash. He manages to solidify the personal angle of the Pearsons’ harrowing story while also using this as an entry point into a larger investigation into both lax aviation safety standards in the private/noncommercial field and questions of who is liable for what damage according to the insurance industry. The author’s maintenance of this balance between the more delicate intimacies of Toby Pearson’s post-crash family life and the more reportorial and investigative side of the book works well… A sensitive portrayal of a family tragedy needlessly escalated by the insensitive bureaucracy of insurance companies." --Kirkus

“In FALLING THROUGH CLOUDS Damian Fowler has captured the drama, narrative sweep and broad implications of one family's remarkable encounter with tragedy and injustice. It strikes me as another A CIVIL ACTION by Jonathan Harr, but with even more drama and pathos." —James B. Stewart, Pulitzer-Prize winning journalist and bestselling author of DisneyWar

“Falling Through Clouds is a story of unthinkable pain and loss. Yet ultimately it's the story of survival -- a harrowing testament to human love, strength and resilience."

--Patrick Smith, author of Cockpit Confidential

“This story had my heart from the first page, and it has stayed with me since. For anyone who has ever suffered through any sort of tragedy, this story reminds us that beauty often rises up from despair. It is beautifully written and gripping from start to finish.”

--Sarah Smiley, author of Dinner with the Smileys and Going Overboard

“Falling Through Clouds is a gripping, emotional and wonderfully written narrative of tragedy and triumph, social justice, and the bonds of love. Most of all, it is a tale of one father's determined struggle to care for two little girls who survived an unthinkable catastrophe. If you like David v. Goliath narratives where the little guy overcomes all odds, you will devour this book.”

--David Kirby, author of Death at SeaWorld, Animal Factory, and Evidence of Harm

"Falling Through Clouds balances this David vs. Goliath legal fight against the devastating emotional and physical recoveries of all parties... The judicial and statutory resolutions that Toby Pearson and his lawyer finally effect are indeed remarkable, but what trumps all the legal machinations are Grace and Lily’s survival.” –Minneapolis Star Tribune

“When he first heard about the Pearson family, Fowler only had planned on writing a longer magazine-style piece. But then he talked to Toby Pearson on the phone. The hour-long conversation was so compelling that it led to Fowler visiting the Pearson family and digging even deeper into the tragedy and Toby Pearson's fight with the insurance company. He got to know the family and even played soccer with the girls one memorable fall day, he said. Early on, Fowler felt an obligation to tell the Pearson family's story and tell it right.” --Pioneer Press

Great read!
By Greg McGee
I am somewhat close to the story and was nervous about how it would be told. I thought Damian wrote and accurate, detailed and personal account that kept me glued to it through to the end. I read the book in one sitting. Damian handled both the personal tragedy and legal aspects with ease and focus. This is a must read.

By Taisiya Pushkar
I've just finished reading "Falling Through Clouds", it's been on my table for about a month and I finally started it three days ago....and could not put it down! What an incredible story, and what amazing storytelling! I quickly realized this was not a train read as tears were coming up quite frequently, both sad and happy, and ended up reading most of it at home. I can't imagine the kind of research this took to put together, it was so well explained and I think Damian Fowler covered all of the questions that came up in my head while reading, especially the latter part. And what emotional strain, this must have been a difficult journey for the author as well. I'm sure the family was very happy with the book, their story was told with such care, grace and sensitivity, while still facing the reader with everything, I really felt like I went through this saga with them. Damian brought me inside the story, showed me everything as though I was a silent witness of it all. So emotional, and so deep, and every word felt true. An important story to tell, of a person going through a devastating personal tragedy, but not closing down on himself and shutting the world out, but getting through it, turning around and making a a real positive change for everyone around him! A really really good read!

Poignant and relevant.
By J. S.
I just finished Damian Fowler’s book and my only regret is not reading it as soon as I had it in my possession.
As an aspiring writer, this book brings many emotions in me. I feel jealousy, pride, awe, and the most profound admiration for shedding light on such a poignant story, for digging the many holes surrounding it, doing the research, and sitting down to write each and every single page with absolute focus.
This is a story of survival, resiliency, and love. It’s about trying to fight the system, after having lost too much. And then fighting it again for the sake of future victims.
Throughout the book, I kept cheering for this wonderful guy, Toby. But I also felt extremely grateful that he shared his story. I can’t imagine how difficult it must have been for him—and the entire family—to relive the details of this harrowing event. Thank you for sharing this story and telling it in a relatable way, without pounding the reader with difficult law and insurance lingo that would probably be very hard to digest.

Blueprints, by Barbara Delinsky

Returning to her beloved New England, the New York Times bestselling author of Sweet Salt Air explores the limits of love and asks what happens when the right man comes along at the wrong time?

Caroline and Jamie McAfee are close. Not only do they enjoy their relationship as mother and daughter, they're in business together as the team that fronts the popular home renovation show Gut It! All is well with these two strong women, but when the network tells Caroline that Jamie is to replace her as host, Caroline feels betrayed by her daughter and old in the eyes of the world.

Jamie is unsettled by the cast change and devastated by her mother's anger, but she has little time to brood when a tragic accident leaves her two-year-old half-brother in her care. Accustomed to a life of order and precision, Jamie suddenly finds herself out of her depth, grappling with a toddler who misses his parents and a fiancé who doesn't want the child.

Amid such devastation, Caroline and Jamie find themselves revising the blueprints they've built their lives around. With loyalties shifting and decisions looming, mother and daughter need each other; but the rift between them is proving difficult to mend. As the women try to remake themselves and rebuild their relationship with each other, they discover that strength and even passion can come from the unlikeliest places. For Caroline, it's an old friend, whose efforts to seduce her awaken desires that have been dormant for so long that she feels foreign to herself. For Jamie, it's a staggering new attraction that allows her to breathe again-and breathe deeply-for the first time in forever.

A riveting novel from a master storyteller, Barbara Delinsky's Blueprints reminds us that sometimes love appears when we least expect it, and when we need it most.

Growing up, growing older...life is constantly changing
By L. Burns
Caroline MacAffee gets an unwelcome surprise on her 56th birthday when the powers-that-be decide that she's too old to continue hosting her home improvement show. The network is looking for "younger" and they have a new host in mind: Caroline's 29 year old daughter, Jamie.

The network's decision drives a wedge between mother and daughter and the fallout serves as a catalyst for both of them to reevaluate their relationship and the directions their lives are taking.

I'm a little torn on this one. Overall I enjoyed it, but I had a few issues (but we'll get to that later). First, let's start with the good stuff:

I like Caroline; it's refreshing to have a 50+ female character take on a major role in a novel. The author brings up issues that many women of a certain age can relate to, like being marginalized professionally and learning to negotiate the tricky terrain of mid-life romance. Well done.

I thought the author did an interesting job of exploring the complexities of the mother/daughter relationship. To me, Caroline and Jamie's relationship wasn't "close" as much as stifling. It's mentioned several times that Jamie has no friends and doesn't feel the need for any as Caroline is her BFF. I actually thought their post-riff relationship was healthier - adults treating each other as equals. I'd be curious to know how others viewed it.

As for the writing itself, Barbara Delinsky has been very successful for a long time, and there's a reason for that: she's a professional and it shows! From the technical things like sentence structure, grammar and dialog to the ability to execute a well thought out storyline, there's little here to quibble about. It's always a pleasure to read smooth and professional writing.

Now to Jamie: this is a character that I liked less as the story progressed. The author throws obstacles in her path only to have a white knight swoop in and smooth the way every time. I think 29 year old Jamie acted like a teen-ager, making impulsive (even reckless) decisions and yet there are never any negative consequences. Everything just neatly falls into place almost as if Jamie has a slew of fairy godmothers hovering close by lest she feel any anguish for more than half a day. Sheesh.

Finally, the entire story takes place over approx. a two week period, and this truncated time frame made some of the plot seem stilted and unrealistic. Characters simply abandon long-held beliefs basically overnight while others are dismissed as being unable to adapt to change after being given all of 5 days to do so! I just found it odd.

In the end I enjoyed this enough to go with a 4 star rating; it was a good read, but I didn't love it. You should probably know that because of the "HGTV"-like theme there are a lot of descriptions of houses and design style. I like that type of thing but I could see where some might find it tedious. There's little (if any) swearing/strong language and some very mild, non-explicit sexual content.

Always believe in the possibility of love finding its way to you
By Mary Gramlich
Caroline has the ability to take the worst that comes at her, reformulate her plans, and start again with new ideas better than the ones she thought were well constructed. She survived marriage to a man who traded her in for a younger version, built a career on her own as a carpenter, became a home rebuilding show host, and raised an amazing daughter in Jamie her show co-host and best friend. But change has a cruel way of expressing itself and when the show decides that she is too old to be the face of their home renovation show, Gut It! that was enough. Especially when she feels her daughter was part of the conspiracy to force her out of the picture and conspire to take her place in front of the camera. Feeling deceived by everyone she starts a pity party that extends until a tragic turn of events with her ex-husband and his wife has everyone taking a deep breath and questioning what tomorrow will bring.

Jamie thought her career was the driving force in her life along with her fiancé but the show and her job came way before a wedding which was on her to do list not a get done next list. She was the architectural brains behind McAfee Homes, a family business who produced one of a kind quality homes. Being the co-host on the show with her mom had been exciting and pushed her toward new heights but taking over was never a consideration and the fact that her mother believes she was working behind the scenes to boot her out was heartbreaking. Then everything takes a back burner to her half-brother, now orphaned as a result of the tragic death of her father and step mother. Taddy is two years old and needs someone there for him right now, and while she has always adored him mothering him is way out of her comfort zone. But there was no time for a learning curve as she walked out of her father's house as a mother to a child she was responsible for full time from that moment on. The problems became obvious with her lack of experience and a fiancé who wanted no part of this premade family. The holes in their relationship were too big to ignore especially when Jamie finds herself drawn to a single father who seems to flawlessly know how to manage life as a single parent. While Jamie was born responsible Chip had to grow in to it but the man he became over took whatever mistakes his youth had created. Showing Jamie the parenting ropes and trying to help her see the way through the chaos that is single parenting they grow close and realize that what might take other people years to establish they have united in a week.

The rift between mother and daughter finds its own balance as Caroline stokes the fires of a flame she never expected to catch fire let alone burn so strong. Dean is a man she has known at McAfee Homes for so long she felt he saw through her not quite so deeply into her soul that they were one in the same. Having carried a torch for her so years, Dean decides it is time to push the envelope and see where his heart mixed with Caroline's can take them, and take them right into an amazing relationship is exactly where he wants to be. So together they explore life as a man who loves dogs and a woman with three alpha cats not quite ready to give up their space to an interloper. Caroline is not feeling so old now!

Readers are drawn to the characters, enthralled by the romance, moved by the story, and longing for the story to never end. What a wonderful experience every Barbara Delinsky book is, and this one proves the tradition continues

Waste Of Time.
By JerseyGirl Yvonne
This book was just an absolute drag in terms of pacing. Also, there just was not much going on in terms of plot. It was all talk, talk, talk on every page. And the men in this book were so totally unbelievable. They were all saints and they spoke in terms that no man that I have ever known would talk. On and on and on about their feelings. In fact so did the women.

I thought I would enjoy this one since it was based on a family business that had a television show not unlike that of the PBS "This Old House" or the HGTV show "Rehab Addict". However, the book dealt with very little about the family business and was so overloaded with everybody talking about their feelings that I was just bored to tears. However, I persevered and completed it up to the very end where the last few pages dealt with one of the family members dealing with very big issues. And that issue was the making of cole slaw. Yep you got it - cole slaw.

I found one discrepancy that the editors missed and these little things bug me when reading. On one page the color and the cut of a woman's blouse was the main focus and that color was brown. A few pages later, the color was navy. It is a small thing but I hate mistakes like this.

Save your reading time for much better books. In fact, read one of Delinsky's older books, "A Woman Betrayed". Now that is a good book but not this one.

Dangerous idead
By Sweetnes34
This book contains ideas that are harmful to pets, garlic will cause anemia for example. Vets obtain educations tougher than human docs, give them (and your cat) the respect of listening to them unless you want your pet sicker than when you started.

Dangerous to pets.
By Gia Harris
Why is this book being sold? It is promoting known toxins fr pets that veterinary professionals advise against. Poor job Amazon. This should be removed from sale.

HORRIFIC!
By Megan Heberlein
Gave 1 star because apparently zero isn't an option.

Saw this book today, and just from reading the back, I can tell you that the author recommends three toxins on the back alone. I guess killing your pet with these things would be one way of keeping them out of the vet's office, but not the way I'd recommend.

Imposter Bride, The
CHAPTER 1

In a small room off a banquet hall in Montreal, Lily Kramer sat in silence with her new husband. It was summer and the room was hot. There were no windows and no door, only a curtain beyond which the guests--almost none of whom she knew--washed down sponge cake and herring with shots of schnapps and vodka. Lily and her husband sat on either end of the couch on which she assumed they were meant to consummate their marriage. In front of the couch was a table laid with fruit and hard-boiled eggs. Her husband picked up a plum and rolled it in the palm of his hand. His name was Nathan and she had known him for a week. It was his brother, Sol, she had been meant to marry, a man she had corresponded with but hadn't met, who had caught one glimpse of her as she disembarked at the station and decided he wouldn't have her. Lily watched Nathan roll the plum in his hand and wondered what his brother had seen in her that made him turn away.Nathan picked up a knife and began scoring the skin of the plum into sections. They had not yet touched, not even a brush of hand or lip upon becoming husband and wife. She could still count the number of glances they had exchanged, the first when she'd sat on the couch at the house where she was staying, so ashamed by the rejection at the station that she'd had to struggle to meet his gaze while he apologized on behalf of his brother and entire family."Your brother cannot even apologize on his own behalf?" she asked. She was surprised by her shame. Disappointed. She had no time to waste--no strength--on a man who fled at the mere sight of a woman. Or so she would have thought."Not even that," Nathan replied."No great loss, then," she said, forcing a lightness she didn't feel into her voice. She had crossed two oceans to marry this Sol. She had nothing and no one to return to."The loss is his," Nathan said quietly. She had thought he would leave then, beat a hasty retreat from his brother's misdemeanour, but he didn't. He remained standing before her, shifting his weight from foot to foot."Would you like to sit down?" she asked finally. His eyes were warm and brown; there was no pity in them. And he seemed to like what he saw. Already there was heat in his gaze.He returned the next day to formalize their engagement. Why the rush? Lily wondered when he reappeared at the door. It was not as if she were fielding other offers, would be taken by another if he didn't quickly stake his claim. But then she knew, thought she knew. It was the rush of colour to her face when he had first entered the room, the lowered gaze that she'd had to force upwards, her chin raised in defiance of whatshe felt. He had returned to banish her shame. He brought witnesses and brandy--and the same heat in his gaze. He was a lucky man, Lily thought at that moment. His desire inclined him to acts of goodness."Do you speak English?" he asked her that day. They'd been speaking Yiddish until then."Ticket," she answered. "Bread. Cousin. Suitcase."Her English was good, near fluent, in fact. It was her anger at that moment that made her conceal it, sudden anger at his assumption that it was she who was the more ignorant of the two--she who spoke five languages and could get by in several others, who had smuggled lives across borders he wouldn't be able to find on a map. Rage, in fact, that it should have come down to this: if Nathan Kramer would have her, she would have him and be grateful. She, who had held all of life and death between her two hands before dying and washing up into this pale afterlife of her own existence."Freedom," she continued. "Buttons. Train.""Buttons?" he asked, smiling."Eisenbergs," she said, naming the family that was hosting her, Sol's employer, whose business was buttons."Yes, yes, I understand," Nathan said, still smiling. He knew she spoke English, had known from the expressions on her face as she'd followed his earlier conversation with the Eisenbergs--all in English. He had met greenhorns before, knew their nodding at wrong moments, their delayed smiles, awkward laughter, baffled eyes. There was none of that in her. She was tired, yes, after the long journey she had made, and certainly confused and distressed by his brother's behaviour at the station, but she was not a woman who didn't understand what was being said all around her. Sheunderstood perfectly. And yet pretended she didn't. That intrigued him.He had wanted her at once, had decided the moment he'd first stepped into the room. It was not her beauty that drew him. Not merely her beauty. He saw it, of course--how could one not? The fine bones of her face, the smoky blue eyes ... But it was the tension in her, a feral tension, part hunger, part fear. It was that which had quickened his blood, that--not her shame--which had made him return the next day with his witnesses and brandy. He had not expected to find such tension in the living room of Sam Eisenberg, the Button King of Montreal. He had met many girls already in the living rooms of Jewish Montreal. Nice girls and not-so-nice, intelligent girls, beautiful girls, wily, witty, hopeful girls, but this ... no, not this."Please," he said now, holding out a segment of the plum, the first exchange of their married life.He watched her--his new bride--as she took a bite of the fruit. Her eyes filled with tears."What?" he asked."Nothing." She shook her head, closed her eyes briefly. "It's a good plum, not too sweet."They had both fasted that day, in accordance with tradition. Should they have broken that fast on something else, Nathan wondered now, begun their marriage with a bite of egg, perhaps, symbolic of new life? A slice of melon, wholly sweet, without the tart edge of a plum?"It's many years since I tasted a plum like that," Lily said in her near-perfect English. She handed the remainder of the segment back to him, took a long drink of water, then held the glass against her cheek to cool her skin."It's warm," he said, and she agreed. She moved the glass to her other cheek, though it was no longer cool on her skin. Nathan handed her a napkin and she smiled her thanks as she wiped the sweat from her brow and upper lip. He had not seen her smile until then.

LILY AZEROV KRAMER. She was not who she said she was.No one really is, I suppose, but Lily's deception was more literal than most. Her name before ... she'd left it there, in that beaten village where the first Lily had died, freeing, among other things, an identity card to replace the one she'd discarded, an identity that could propel a future if someone would just step into it.Someone would, of course. The village was in Poland, 1944. Nothing went unused. And here are some of the things that that someone acquired when she stole the identity of a girl she hadn't known at all in life: the name, first of all, Lily Azerov; the identity card; a pair of woollen socks; a notebook filled with dreams and other scribblings; a single frosted stone. She pulled the socks over the threadbare ones she was already wearing. The identity card and notebook she stuffed inside the waistband of her trousers, but not before memorizing the only item of practical worth in the notebook's pages: Sonya Nemetz, Rehov Hayarkon 7, Tel Aviv. The stone, which she knew to be a diamond, she slipped inside her body.It was only then that she hesitated, only as she was ready to leave that something as strong as her will to survive overtook her. She knew she should flee. Every instinct prodded her to leave that village at once and make her way back to theforest, where she could wait until it was safe to start moving again. And then to move, to join the mass of refugees flooding west in the wake of the liberating army, to fold herself into that mass and begin the life that might, in time, become her own. Move, she told herself, as she had so many times over the past three years, her instincts always keeping her a few inches beyond death's grasp. But something other than instinct rose in her that day. She hesitated. Her eye lingered. Was it the angle of the dead girl's body, limbs slightly askew as her younger sister's had once been in sleep? A fragment of the girl's dreams that had floated up and entered her as she quickly leafed through the notebook? The shadow of the rat skittering, the smell of its next meal luring it closer? She stayed. She placed her open hand on the smooth, cold brow, passed it over sightless eyes--greyish blue like her own--and brought down the lids. The eyes would be covered. That was the least and most she felt she could do. She could bring down the lids of the eyes and hold them for a moment. This she did for the girl whose future she was stealing. And then she fled.

SOL KRAMER was among the guests at the wedding. The wedding that should have been his. Throughout the evening he could be seen toasting the bride and groom and lifting his brother high above his head in dancing more frenzied than joyous. His voice boomed louder than that of any other guest, his face shone with sweat."L'chaim," he shouted, downing shot after shot of whisky. He already regretted his decision. That was the sort of man Sol Kramer was. If he ate brown bread for breakfast, he later wished he'd eaten white. Didn't merely wish, spent good time wondering how his day would have gone, how much better he would have felt--his gut, his entire being--had he only eaten white bread instead of brown. The bride looked good to him now. There was a boldness in her expression that he hadn't noticed before, that hadn't been there, he could swear, when she first stepped off the train. She'd looked bewildered then, glancing...

Missing too much
By Paper or Kindle
This book is okay, but could have been much better. There is a basic rule of writing that states "Show, don't tell" and unfortunately, she takes it beyond its limits. There are scenes where I would have appreciated more insight, more conversation, more information of any kind. Instead, there are observations that don't further the story. This isn't really a spoiler - in one scene, there is almost no conversation or emotion, but it is a scene that is vital to the book. Rather than offering any illumination into the minds of the participants, trivialities are dwelled upon, such as an offer of tea and cake that aren't eaten. I don't mind using my imagination to fill in gaps, but I don't expect to have to mentally write the book, either. The plot premise is intriguing: a bride who isn't the woman she seems to be, a groom who rejects her, a brother stepping up to the plate, an abandoned husband and baby, and an enduring mystery, a legacy of unknowns to be researched. But it struck me as rather too dry and unenlightening. It isn't exactly a romance, but might have worked better as one (with some judicious editing and elaboration).

Motherhood
By Roger Brunyate
A young woman, Lily Azerov, arrives in Montreal after the Second World War, where a Jewish husband has been found for her. She marries, has a baby girl whom they name Ruth, and then when the baby is three months old, she vanishes out of their lives almost for ever, though resurfacing every few years to send Ruth some pretty stone she has picked up in Western Canada. Ruth's father, Nathan Kramer, misses the elegant and beautiful Lily but does not blame her, recognizing that there are some forms of damage that cannot be repaired, even in the most loving family. Nathan's brother Sol, who was originally intended to marry Lily, recognized this even earlier, impelled by some sudden instinct to flee her at the station, leaving it to his brother to take his place as husband.

For Lily is not who she says she is, merely the holder of an identity card she found on a dead girl in the confused months at the end of the War, together with a journal in Yiddish and an uncut diamond. Yes, the premise takes a bit of believing, especially as Lily comes into contact in Montreal with a cousin of the real Lily. But these were confused times when people would do almost anything to salvage something from the wreckage. "Lily" is presented sympathetically throughout; we sense there is little culpable in her behavior.

On these foundations, Nancy Richler goes on to build a warm and remarkably rounded novel -- one about survivors' trauma, yes, but also about families in general and motherhood in particular. Ruth, in effect, has many mothers. One, of course, is her birth mother, who increasingly occupies her curiosity, as she tries to find out not only about the dead Lily but also about the woman who took her name. After she left, Ruth grew up surrounded by three powerful women: her grandmother Bella, her great aunt by marriage Ida Pearl (cousin of the real Lily Azerov), and Ida's daughter Elka, who marries Sol. It seems more complex in summary than it is in fact. As the book follows Ruth from her sixth birthday up to marriage and motherhood of her own, with numerous flashbacks to Lily's first year in Montreal, the impression is rather of a mutually supportive family group, built on false pretences perhaps, but rising above them to make something enduring and strong.

Canada is a country that has long welcomed refugees, and post-Holocaust literature seems a frequent theme, whether in the two best-sellers by Anne Michaels (FUGITIVE PIECES and THE WINTER VAULT) or in lesser-known books such as THE WHITE SPACE IN BETWEEN by Amy Sands Brodoff. I preferred Richler's book to any of these, though she does not attempt Michaels' scale. But the book that I thought of most often (also by a woman, though an American one) was Nicole Krauss' THE HISTORY OF LOVE -- and that comparison is high praise indeed.

Interesting Premise; Good Secondary Characters ...
By delicateflower152
An imposter is one who assumes the identity of another; in Nancy Richler's novel "The Imposter Bride", the protagonist "Lily Azerov" is that imposter. As did some other Holocaust survivors in post-World War II Europe, this young woman assumes the identity of another. Taking identification papers and a journal from a corpse, she assumes the life of Lily Azerov. This mysterious young woman eventually arrives in Canada to enter into an arranged marriage; her groom-to-be, Sol Kramer, rejects her at the train station. Her subsequent marriage to his brother, Nathan, and eventual abandonment of her husband and infant daughter form the basis for the remainder of the novel's story.

"The Imposter Bride" begins with an interesting premise, but overall Nancy Richter's novel does not live up to its initial promise. The book's more compelling sections are followed by less interesting, less gripping narratives that resulted in a letdown. The characters, with few exceptions, lack appeal. Set in mid-20th century Canada, the book's overall tone and the characters' attitudes seemed more similar those of the early 20th century. While the majority of the characters are immigrants or first-generation Canadians, the atmosphere created within the novel is decidedly "old-fashioned."

Ruth Kramer, Lily and Sol Kramer's daughter, was a character who failed to fully develop. Her desires, ambition, and sense of self seemed to disappear as she reached adulthood; she became boring. Even though the portions of "The Imposter Bride" involving Ruth were written in the first person, they never seemed intimate or personal.

Nevertheless, "The Imposter Bride" did hold some more engaging narratives. Two secondary characters - Ida Pearl Krakauer and Bella Kramer - were the most interesting individuals presented to readers. Their back stories, which were parsed out throughout "The Imposter Bride", were fascinating. That the two single mothers survived and raised children during an era when few women did so demonstrated the strength each possessed. The hints at their past lives piqued my interest and made me long for greater depth and detail when portions of their stories were discussed.

"The Imposter Bride" deserves 3.5 stars; portions are better than the average novel, but not so compelling as to cause me to really like the book. It is a novel that is easy-to-read and somewhat interesting, but one that is less than memorable.
