A FASCINATING HISTORY OF THE CHRISTMAS TREE (c. 1960)

At the time this book was published in 1960, Daniel J. Foley was "a widely known horticulturalist, author, and lecturer," who had served as editor of Horticulture for seven years. He wrote in the Introduction, "Practically unknown a century ago, the Christmas tree has become so much an integral part of the season of greatest joy that we would not feel the presence of Christmas without the fetive tree. How and when it came to us and how its popularity grew have been told in fact and fiction a thousand times, but most of the accounts, fanciful and delightful as they are, have overlooked its true origin... The spirit imbued by Peace on Earth ... although dimmed at times by war and pestilence and the greed of men... [is] symbolized in countless ways and most dramatically in the Christmas tree." (Pg. 11-12)
He observes, "Although the decorative use of flowers and fruits continued to play a vital part in the everyday lives of the Greeks and Romans during the early centuries of the Christian era, the church fathers finally decreed that this pagan practice must cease. However, it was not long before the churchmen realized how meaningful and symbolic these deeply rooted traditions were and the ban was lifted." (Pg. 23)
He states, "the tree of trees as we know it... had its beginning in a medieval play about Adam and Eve, presented during Advent... In those remote days it was the custom to commemorate the feast day of our first parents, which occurred on December 24." (Pg. 39) He adds, "what of the lights on the Christmas tree? The candle as the prime source of light ... represented Christ in all His glory---the Light of the World..." (Pg. 41)
He records, "Many attempts have been made to associate the Christmas tree with the more ancient Yule tree of German and Scandinavian folklore. It was s custom to place an evergreen, called a Yule tree, at the entrance, or in the dooryard, or to plant a small specimen in a tub and bring it indoors. This use of a live tree with needles that were ever green, signifying immortality, helped to dispel the gloom of the long, dark cold days of winter." (Pg. 45)
He recounts the stories attributing the Christmas tree traditions as beginning with St. Boniface (8th century) or Martin Luther, although he discounts the Luther story: "Since there is no documented record for this story, it has been relegated to the realm of tradition, but it could have happened." (Pg. 46-47) He also recalls the tremendous influence in England of the 1848 newspaper picture of Queen Victoria, Prince Albert, and their children gathered around a decorated tree, adding, "What captivated the British was this symbolic picture of the royal family gathered around a fanciful illuminated tree which bespoke the essence of domestic tranquility and peace... Nor was the tree a new idea to the young Victoria. She had known of the custom at the age of thirteen as recorded in her diary for December 24, 1832..." (Pg. 58)
He notes near the end of the book, "As we look into the ever-increasing demand for Christmas trees, we must consider also the huge quantities of artificial trees of various kinds, numbering in the millions, which are sold annually... the total number of trees for decoration in America each Christmas season is colossal. Is it any wonder that this country is known as Christmas tree land?" (Pg. 101-102)
Although more than fifty years old, this book still contains much valuable information and interesting illustrations and photos about the history of this much-beloved institution.
