Clear Organization Presents Classic and Uniquely Whimsical Crochet Trim!

Caitlin Sainio presents a wide array of thread crochet trims in her new book, "75 Exquisite Trims in Thread Crochet: For Edgings, Corners, Crescents & More." From traditional patterns such as the Simple Chain or Pinapple Lace trims to whimsical and unique designs such as Teddy Bears on Swings or Rainbows, there is sure to be a perfect trim for you, whether new or experienced in crochet work.

The instructions are clear, with foundation rows written out with crochet abbreviations, but the main pattern is written using crochet symbols --no need to fear if you are not familiar with these, as the book contains a symbol chart for easy reference. Every pattern includes instructions for turning outer corners (such as if you were to trim the edge of a table cloth) and for turning inner corners (such as trimming the inside of a square neckline blouse).

There are clever holiday themed designs and ones that would be perfect for children. However, there are also more stylish patterns that teens and adults would be comfortable wearing --perhaps edging a scarf or as another accent. There is also a brief section on project ideas and samples on how to utilize the trims.

As these patterns are designed for thread crochet (with small sized hooks), I'd recommend this book to crocheters who are at least comfortable with the basic crochet stitches and techniques before tackling trims in this book. However, none of the trims look too difficult and should be accessible to intermediate and more experienced crocheters.

The photographs are clear and allow you to easily envision the finished designs. They are so tempting, even to me --someone who rarely uses crochet thread-- that I want to pick up a spool and steel hook and start one now! I look forward to starting one soon...

Wonderful crochet book!

This book was given to me as a gift, and I just love it! It is loaded with gorgeous trims varied enough to work in an infinite number of applications. There are patterns perfect for any skill level, and the crochet refresher at the beginning of the book was awesome, with great illustrations and clear instructions, so it was very easy to understand (even for a near-novice at crochet like me).

I loved leafing through the "Trim Selector" section and choosing designs to try. The patterns are organized by type - single color lace, multi-color lace, floral trims, fall harvest, winter holiday, creature designs and designs for children. Some are simple and elegant, others very ornate; they are all exquisite indeed and beautifully photographed. I found myself imagining lots of crochet projects I would take on if only I had the time, and I consider that the mark of a great craft book!

I very highly recommend this lovely book. But beware - you may find yourself clearing your calendar just so you can spend more time crocheting!

Thread! I need more thread!

I appreciate that Caitlin Sainio has produced several crochet books designed for thread work. (Check out her 100 Lace Flowers and her 100 Snowflakes.) Not all, not even most, designs for yarn transfer well to thread. These borders are unique not only in that but in their lovely use of color. While you will find thread designs for trims, as a rule they tend to be white or off white. Sainio uses solid colors, two colors, even a rainbow trim -- lovely rainbows peeking out from behind clouds.

There are traditional edgings with scallops, picots, points, etc. There are some insertions. There are sophisticated designs for adults and adorable ones for children. One trim has tiny little afghan squares hanging from a lacy border. Several floral and leaf designs are so sweet. Some are seasonal, such as a pumpkin vine, cornstalks, color-changing leaves, holly or snowflakes or hanging stockings. There are creatures: butterflies, dragonflies, turtles, dolphins, birds. There are teddy bears on swings. Yes! Teddy bears on swings! Can you stand it?

The only thing I would suggest it lacks is charts for turning corners. I love charts, this book has wonderful charts, but turning corners is a little different and I'm lazy. There. I said it.

So now my husband can do the dishes while I start on the Tulips border. No, wait. That Hearts design is wonderful, but wouldn't those Turtles look great on my grandson's shirt? Balloons, he loves balloons! More thread, need more thread...

Don't judge this book by its cover!

My standards are probably higher than most people's as I've been crocheting for more than 44 years and I'm selective about adding a book to my library. My low rating is a criticism of the book's cover claim and a few of its unfulfilled implied promises.
Several projects are prominently displayed on the front and back cover (two are repeated within) and within. I find it highly disappointing that there are no references for patterns for these- in this volume or at other locations. This can't be for lack of space as some items are fully explained twice: ruffled and shell edging fto name just two.

Missing are directions for 2 different flowers, each with large pictures on the cover and inside pages(26, 66), 2 sets of booties(60,72), a large motif (80), and a jacket and skirt outfit (25).

Using the book would be easier, especially for beginners, if there was some cross-referencing; for example, Cobble stitch is explained on page 45, but there is no photo of the stich until the Stitch Directory at the end of the book.

What I liked: the spiral binding (his book is made to last), the photo project directory, the range of projects: simple/intermediate/advanced, projects using a range of fiber weights and uses, projects for Broomstick, Hairpin, Tunisian.

Could author Julie Oparka, project editors Hissey and Brook, and editing director Gregory done a better job of working together on this book?

Alisa Solomon teaches at Columbia University's Graduate School of Journalism, where she directs the Arts & Culture concentration in the MA program. A theater critic and general reporter for The Village Voice from 1983 to 2004, she has also contributed to The New York Times, The Nation, Tablet, The Forward, and other publications. Her first book, Re-Dressing the Canon: Essays on Theater and Gender, won the George Jean Nathan Award for Dramatic Criticism. She lives in New York City.

A detailed examination of the history and impact of an icon

The story of Tevye and Anatevka has taken on a cultural life of its own, as has the music from the "Fiddler on the Roof". The worldwide impact is all the more impressive when we look at the story's origins in a series of Yiddish short stories written by Sholem-Aleichem in the decades that bridge the 19th and 20th centuries. The path from these beginnings to Broadway and Hollywood success was neither straightforward nor easy, and it was not clear that these stories would find wide acceptance. That the story has been so wildly successful is a tribute to the efforts of the many people who worked so hard to interpret and transform the stories, while preserving something essential that seems to speak to widely diverse audiences.

This book is a detailed examination of the history of that transformation, from the original short stories, through various efforts to adapt them to the stage, to the ultimate Broadway and Hollywood triumphs that mark the "Fiddler on the Roof". Along the way, it touches on issues as widely divergent as the immigration and assimilation struggles of Eastern European Jews in the US in the first half of the 20th century, the history of American theater in the middle of the century, and the cultural impact that the musical has had since it opened on Broadway in the mid-1960s.

At times, the level of detail swamps the narrative, but it attests to the depth of the author's research into the history and impact of this work. There are parts of this book that are likely to appeal to a wide range of readers, from those who want to understand the effort it takes to construct a Broadway musical, to those who want to better understand the cultural and political concerns of Jewish immigrants a century ago. Personally, I found the discussion of the impact of the musical to be interesting, especially the role it has taken on in helping Poland address its history in the wake of the Holocaust and the Soviet era.

So the book itself is a mixed bag, and different readers will probably struggle with different parts of it. But there is a lot of information her for a reader willing make the effort.

WONDER OF WONDERS, A CULTURAL HISTORY OF FIDDLER ON THE ROOF by Alisa Solomon is, in a single word,'WONDERFUL!' This author has done an exceptional job of providing an energetic tone to a narrative that is enjoyable and fun to read. Included in the engaging history of how FIDDLER came to be are true behind-the-scene stories about very colorful showbiz personalities and other characters that the reader comes to know and (usually) love. Often hilarious,sometimes intense and always entertaining, these true tales are just one way that the author captivates her audience. WONDER OF WONDERS is both powerful and entertaining, just like FIDDLER ON THE ROOF- it is a must have/must read for all FIDDLER fans.

A brilliant, meticulously researched scholarly book

I first fell in love with FIDDLER ON THE ROOF when I saw it performed on stage. I was twelve years old. My family played the record (LP) so many times, there were grooves within the grooves. In 1971, I again fell in love with FIDDLER when the movie, staring Israeli actor, Chaim Topol,was released. And now I have fallen in love with FIDDLER all over again thanks to Alisa Solomon's scholarly book, WONDER OF WONDERS, A CULTURAL HISTORY OF FIDDLER ON THE ROOF. Solomon is a brilliant writer who, through meticulous research (all notated) details a complete history and evolution of a phenomenon that, even today, 50 years after first appearing on Broadway, continues to 'speak' to a global audience, crossing many different cultures and faith backgrounds. Solomon's ability to recognize, impeccably research and cohesively and flawlessly describe precisely how FIDDLER became such a beloved global gem, is, in itself, a phenomenon. Solomon provides an encyclopedic knowledge of her subject, and in so doing, offers an erudite compilation that includes rare pictures and wonderful anecdotes taken from interviews (also meticulously documented) with surviving FIDDLER participants and their children. Anyone that loves FIDDLER will love-and learn--from this book.

Inspiration with a dose of love and logic!

It is rare to find such graciousness, while offering ways to live life well, that a person can actually assimilate into their existence. The engaging content in the chapters provide a thoughtful read with real-life experiences that are applicable to most anyone's daily challenges. To help the reader stay grounded, at the end of each chapter are tips to consider. Then, wrapping up each chapter with a visit from "Daddy", adds warmth, love and another reason to move on to the next topic. No doubt, I will be a better person after reading this.

One thing that I didn't know before I bought the book, is that all of the author's royalties are being donated to the Singapore Habitat for Humanity. Talk about living what one teaches.

Technically, the book is well-organized and from a readability standpoint, there are many stories that keep the reader interested and looking for more. Hope that Anthony Rose does a book 2!!

Hilarious

Ted Travelstead has a unique comedic voice and puts it to very good use here satirizing the Petraeus scandal. It's funny, strange and ridiculous without being mean spirited. I have no idea what the real life Petraeus or any of these people are like but I can only hope they are half as vulnerable, bizarre and likable as the characters Travelstead has created.
It's a very funny read and I highly recommend it.

Clever and hilarious

I first discovered Ted Travelstead when I purchased the excellent Sex: Our Bodies, Our Junk. Since then, I have been following him on Twitter (as should you-->@trumpetcake). He is consistently the funniest, most interesting and innovative person in my feed.

Despite my being Canadian and having only a marginal awareness of/interest in the Petraeus scandal, when I heard that Travelstead had written a satirical book about the affair, I circled the upcoming publication date. I purchased the Kindle edition and, as I assumed I would, found the book to be hilarious. You don't have to have any real knowledge of the real-life scandal; Ted creates his own world complete with endearing characters. From The General's aw-shucks, moron-level naïveté to Jill's endless supply of email signature titles, the book kept me smiling (and laughing aloud several times) throughout.

Highly recommeded. And, seek out Ted's other writings and performances.

All the best comedy LOOKS easy.

I laughed. I cried (but that's a personal problem I have and has nothing to do with Ted Travelstead's work). I first discovered his absurdist take on the world via twitter (where he goes by @trumpetcake) a few years ago, and he has been making me laugh on a daily basis since then. Every comedian, pro and wannabe, took their shots at the Petraeus scandal when the story broke, but only Ted had the cajones, and more importantly the comedic chops, to put together this extended riff on the affair. Eggheads talk about two different kinds of satire–Juvenalian, which is the vicious, mean-spirited, tear-the-world-down kind, and Horatian, the kind that Travelstead practices here. It recognizes that even when people deserve to be taken down a bit, they're still people, and a recognition of them as such, married with a bit of "there but for the grace of God go I," only serves to deepen the humor.
