Even though they've all moved from Texas to California to start life as a new, blended family, none of the kids seem remotely happy about it.
Sarah's dad and stepmom then decide to take the whole family on a special vacation in order to break the ice and have everyone get to know one another. They'll fly to Tahiti, charter a boat, and go sailing for a few days. It'll be an adventure, right?
Wrong. Dead wrong.

From School Library Journal
Gr 4–7—In this exciting series debut, 12-year-old Sarah Robinson responds with ill-grace to her father's remarriage after six years as a widower. She is unfriendly to her two stepbrothers, younger Nacho and Marco, her own age. She's even worse to her stepmother. In an effort to bring everyone closer, her dad and stepmom opt to book a family honeymoon on a luxury yacht. A terrible storm, loss of the skipper, and subsequent landing on an island that initially appears inviting but quickly proves otherworldly and dangerous, cause the warring kids to reluctantly work together. These very human protagonists respond in believable ways to their new family situation while encountering freakish animals, bizarrely dangerous weather, and a creepy, empty house. This is intensely readable and will be excellent for reluctant readers. Should be popular with fans of adventure, fantasy, and the slightly sinister.—B. Allison Gray, Goleta Public Library, CA
Review
“A fractured family goes on a sailing trip to bind its wounds, and disaster ensues . . . should leave readers plenty impatient for the next volume.” ―BCCB
“Narrative tension runs high as the kids try to adjust to their new life and the stress of their disastrous vacation . . . this adventure just gets going when the book comes to an end, leaving the story wide open for a sequel.” ―Booklist

Good book.
By Samantha DeVlieger
This book was not what I expected. It was pretty good though and a quick read. I am going to continue the series because I have to know what happens.

Bodeen Captured Me again!
By Melissa's Eclectic Bookshelf
I don't know what it is about SA Bodeen's writing, but she captured me again. I generally have a really hard time losing myself in MG reads....but Shipwreck Island was definitely the exception to that rule. I was caught up by the first page and this book never let go. Great family dynamics and lots of intrigue, mystery and a touch of woowoo make this the perfect read. Whoever described this as a cross between Swiss Family Robinson and Lost got it spot on.
The writing style and pacing are perfect, the dialogue realistic and believable. The plot keeps one interested and invested. What appears to be a simple story about blended families and learning to change and adapt becomes a mysterious story of survival where family lines are redrawn and new bonds are formed.
My only complaint would be that the book was too short, but then I remind myself that it is MG and is probably the perfect length for the target audience. That said I am confident that anyone...male or female...middle grade to adult... would enjoy this one if adventure and mystery is your thing.
Final Thoughts:
I haven't loved a Middle Grade read in a long time and this one was so enjoyable. I can't wait to see what is in store for the family in book 2.
Note: Review copy rcvd from Publisher, but all thoughts and opinions are my own.

Fun but disappointing
By Alba
12-year-old Sarah is not a happy camper when her father remarries. To make matters worse, her new stepmom has two sons, 12-year-old Marco and his younger brother, Nacho. In an attempt to bring the family together, the newlyweds plan a private cruise for their new family. Unfortunately, the trip turns into a nightmare when an unexpected storm lands them shipwrecked on a deserted island. Or, is it deserted? An abandoned, spooky house, some bizarre, freaky animals, and a glowing, red orb in the sky force the castaways to work together for survival.
The book does a great job of showing the realistic resistance of kids in accepting new parents/siblings. Told through both the eyes of Sarah and Ramon, the reader gets a great view of how difficult the transition into a new family can be for kids. The action in the story is exciting and keeps the reader engaged. It is definitely a real page-turner.
However, there were a couple things that will keep me from giving the story a 4 or 5 star review. First, but not that big of a deal, the story was awfully short for a hard cover book. It would have been more accurately represented in a paperback. Paying $16.99 for a book this short felt like a rip-off. I would highly recommend the Kindle/Nook version.
My biggest complaint is the ending. Or, shall I say, lack thereof. I’m not a big fan of cliffhangers, but I can accept them if there is at least some sort of closure to the book. All the great kids’ series (Harry Potter, Percy Jackson, Narnia, etc.) have a story arc that continues throughout the series, but each book has a separate story arc that ends within the book. This book does not. It does not resolve the friction between the siblings, nor does it bring any kind of closure to their situation. It ends with a cliffhanger that does not give the reader any kind of satisfaction. I understand the author wanting to leave people wanting more, but there has to be an element of gratification as you read the last page which this book did not provide.
