Something for Every Dog Lover
By VReviews
Short stories can be so uniquely satisfying. This anthology comes from a diverse set of authors, with very different styles, and is geared for different audiences. Told from a variety of perspectives, adult, child, and dog; there is something for everyone and anyone who appreciates man's best friend.

The first story, "Dognapper" by Wendy Orr is a simple story that is fun to read, and will satisfy the younger elementary school age reader. It doesn't take itself too seriously, and the looseness of the plot works for that age. The second story by Pam Munoz, "Because of Shoe" steps up the complexity of the short story, and delves into the interesting 6th sense dogs have. Each story offers a compact meaningful tale, ending with the accomplished author, Jon J. Muth, who has an uncanny ability to channel the thoughts, ideas, and cadence of how we image our canine friends to think. Muth captures the depth and sensitivity dogs have and their ability perhaps to understand us far better then we do ourselves.

Simply an enjoyable book for all ages, and a treat to read aloud and share.

Enjoyable stories
By book junkie
My 8 year old grabbed this book and read the whole thing in 4 days. My criteria for a good kids book is anything my kids will read, so on that front, it succeeded wildly. As a 40 year old, I wasn't quite as impressed, but it probably wasn't written to appeal to me.

I have to say that this book isn't what I was expecting- I ordered it expecting it to be like the horse story and dog story books of my childhood. Those books were realistic stories about heartwarming relationships between children and animals. Some of these stories in this collection were told from the point of view of the dogs and had adventurous story lines- kidnapping, rescues, etc. One was about a boy turning into a dog! The stories were of varied lengths- from 20 to 40 pages.

My only real criticism is that the stories seem to be intended for different aged children. For example, the first story "Dognapper" has a "zany" storyline and would probably appeal to a much younger reader (3rd grade maybe) than "Things People Can't See" which deals with prejudice and a difficult family situation (7th or 8th grade?). All in all, this is a good and interesting collection of stories.

A Nicely Done Anthology for Young Readers...
By delicateflower152
"Because of Shoe and Other Dog Stories" is a nicely done anthology for young readers. Ann M. Martin has collected stories which cover a wide variety of topics; all of which feature a dog as a primary influence on the story. The stories are engaging; some are funny; and some have a message relevant and appropriate to young readers' lives.

Ranging from 24 pages to 31 pages, the stories are long enough to challenge young readers, but not too long to be read aloud at bedtime. Matt de la Pena's "Things People Can't See" and Jon J. Muth's "Brancusi & Me" are two selections which may appeal more to readers in the upper age range of the target group. "Science Fair" by Mark Teague is an imaginative, magical story which incorporates just enough impossibility to make it quite humorous.

"Because of Shoe ..." is a welcomed addition in the current offering of books aimed at younger readers. While not great literature, it does contain well-written, engaging stories that appeal to a wide range of ages and to both boys and girls.
