About the Author
Mark Green is "next to Nader, the leading public interest lawyer of his generation," according to The Nation. He was on PBS's Firing Line and CNN's Crossfire debating Buckley and Buchanan in the 90s, was a regular on NY1's "Wiseguys" for the past decade, and is the founder of the nationwide radio show, Both Sides Now, currently on 200 stations. He has taught at NYU Law School and NYU College of Arts & Sciences, and has written many books, including New York Times bestsellers Who Runs Congress? and The Book on Bush.

which is useful and insightful reading for anyone interested in seeking public ...

As a Professor of Political Science at Hartwick College in Oneonta NY, I was thrilled that Mark Green was willing to travel upstate to talk about his political and generational memoir, Bright Infinite Future. Mr. Green’s career is fascinating to all and particularly inspiring to young people with ambitions not only to serve in public office, but to actually move “the needle of history.”
Even though I follow politics closely, Mark Green provides an insider view on New York State and New York City politics that one simply cannot get from reading the news. He draws on his first-hand, hard fought knowledge about the political system, including his 2001 New York City mayoral campaign against Michael Bloomberg, to offer practical advice for how to win elections in today’s polarized climate, which is useful and insightful reading for anyone interested in seeking public office.
I found his “eleven years in advocate heaven” as he refers to his time as the elected Public Advocate for New York City (p.101), particularly powerful, as he details some of the ways he was able to put his progressive ideals into concrete action: by inching NYC closer to gender equality, cracking down on racial profiling and police misconduct, and helping break up the mob garbage cartel. The book is worth buying for the amazing pictures alone. My favorite is a picture of Mark Green taking on big tobacco and protesting Joe Camel cigarette ads for appealing to children, by protesting in the streets of NYC with an actual camel.
Mark Green concludes his book by reviewing some observable trends and noting that most of them, including demographic changes, the growing political voice of young people, and the rightward shift of the Republican party, advantage the Democratic party in the 2016 election and beyond. It will be interesting to see whether his predictions are born out as we get closer to this bright, infinite future.
