Not My All-Time Favorite, May Be Better for Experienced Crocheters

Summary: I think 150 Crochet Blocks sacrifices too much important and helpful detail in order to include more block patterns. Experienced crocheters may like this book a lot more than I do. It does include a number of interesting and classic patterns that I like, so I will keep it in my library. But I would not recommend it to beginners. (As of the writing of this review on 4/12/16, I've been crocheting for almost a year now.) More details below.
In my opinion, 100 Colorful Granny Squares is far superior to 150 All-Time Favorite Crochet Blocks. I think the only reason to purchase this title would be to see blocks in more subdued color palettes than those in the 100 Colorful Squares book. Several patterns appear in both books.
Among other things, 100 Colorful Granny Squares provides the yardage/meterage of worsted weight/aran weight yarn that you would need for each color in any given square in order to make a baby, lap, and bed blanket respectively. All of the squares in that book (except the ones in the back labeled as smaller or larger) are approximately the same size, so you can combine them any way you like. Finally, each pattern includes the stitch count for each round. 150 Crochet Blocks DOES NOT have uniformly sized squares, so for a novice like me, it is almost impossible to figure out which blocks I can combine easily. Even the charts accompanying the patterns in this book are misleading. Sometimes they show the wrong number of chains; for example, the pattern for Old Vienna on page 62 says that for part of Round 6, you need to chain two and skip the next three double crochets, but the chart shows THREE chains over the skipped double crochets. Confusing much? At other times, the chart for a block is huge, but if you go back and look at a "life-sized" photograph of the same block, it isn't nearly as big as the chart would lead you to believe. So looking at the charts also gives you no idea of which blocks would combine well with others. In addition, 150 Crochet Blocks DOES NOT give stitch counts for each round; and it doesn't even begin to offer an estimate on the yardage/meterage of any weight yarn, even though it seems that the blocks in the photographs were created using various shades of Rowan Cotton Glace (listed as a light-worsted or DK weight yarn that is actually closer to sport weight or 4-ply, requiring a 3.25mm crochet hook).

Love to Crochet!

I have been crocheting for a very long time and am always looking for new books with new ideas and color combinations. This book is a great find and I will be making and enjoying many afghans. Patterns are easy to follow and very diverse.
