*Starred Review* A lost-cat poster is an invitation to care about a missing loved one. So begins Davidson’s exploration of the stories she discovers behind the lost-cat posters she began to notice everywhere after she lost her own cat, Zak. A psychotherapist, Davidson often found Zak in her office with her clients, and after she found him again, she realized that she wanted to pass on the support she’d received while Zak was missing. What follows are 20 stories (2 of which are about Zak) of lost cats and their owners. Each story is illustrated with the lost-cat poster, from which the author initially deduced information about the owner (terse descriptions are by males, words like heartbroken denote females), followed by the stories told to her by the cats’ owners. Interwoven with tales such as the mystery of Shelby’s escape, of Joe caught in a garage awaiting rescue for three days after he was discovered, and of Bailey, stolen by a neighbor, are Davidson’s musings about love and relationships, anecdotes from her practice that gave her insights, and ultimately a road map of the journey she took as she learned about the inevitability of change. Unique, surprising and very interesting

You've never read a book like this before. I really liked it. The author is a psychotherapist who becomes obsessed with lost cat posters after her cat was lost. She begins to contact the cat owners and listen to their stories. She begins to analyze the posters, guessing quite accurately who might have written the poster. Many of the cats were returned to their owners, some were lost. It's mostly a pretty uplifting book. The stories are surprising and interesting.

Not Just For Cat Lovers

This is the book I've been waiting for, an enjoyable, open walk with a cat lover who is also a psychotherapist. Dr. Davidson shares her own experience, seasoning it with humor and insights into human nature and into the mysterious cat. It is a gift I will be giving to my many cat loving friends.

Dr. Nancy Davidson, cat sleuth and psychotherapist, has merged a unique gift for understanding people with a sharp feline sensibility to produce a witty, profound, well-written book. The style is accessible and the stories nicely paced, with each chapter possessing its own identity while also contributing to an overall narrative movement that gains in power and complexity over the course of the book. Dr. Davidson also has absorbed the art of scene setting and character shading from film noir. She is particularly skilled at depicting human emotion during crisis situations, as the loss of a cat can feel as traumatic as losing a family member, lover, or close friend. With strong and endearing empathy, but not without humor that is often hilarious, Dr. Davidson probes the secrets of lost cats that double as revelations about the inner lives of their owners. The relationships of the lost cat owners with their pets become the material that the good doctor transforms into humane but often gut-wrenching insights about the experiences of love, loss, and letting go that define the human lot.
