About the Author
JONATHAN CARROLL is the author of eighteen novels including THE LAND OF LOVE, WOODEN SEA, WHITE APPLES, and THE GHOST IN LOVE among others. He graduated cum laude from Rutgers University and studied for his Masters Degree at the University of Virginia while working as an English teacher. His love of teaching took him to the American International School in Vienna, Austria. Carroll currently writes and lives in Vienna.

Jonathan Carroll Can Count Me as a New Fan

My whole family (consisting of me, my 13 year old son, my husband) read this book, and we all enjoyed it, though to varying degrees.
I love to read and have always been an indiscriminate reader - any genre, just about any level of quality, I will read it, even if I don't like it. My favorite books are the ones that stay with me after I finish them, and this is one of those books. Days after I finished it, I was still pondering the ending and revisiting earlier parts to marvel at how it all fits together. If you want an engaging read that continues to occupy you after you finish it, this book is a good choice.
My husband likes literary fiction and doesn't have a ton of patience with genre, although he used to enjoy Vonnegut, Bradbury, and Asimov. He tore through the book and, while initially kind of curmudgeonly and critical, was a fan by the middle and loved the end.
My son loved it the most. He has always loved fantasy/sci-fi/mythic fiction, to the point that I became a superfan from reading it with him. This book kept him engaged throughout, with twists that were both fun and, in his words, MINDBLOWING - WOW.
Final verdict: a terrific book for mature teenagers on up

Brave old world

It's difficult to describe this book because it doesn't fit into any particular genre. It is clearly not reality, because the characters turn out to have paranormal abilities that transcend any particular planet or timeline. It is not essentially funny, though there are witty flashes that remind me of Douglas Adams' Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy. It is not what I normally consider literary fiction, though there is a metaphysical conflict that is set up throughout the book. But it is clearly written, very easy to fall into...something like falling into the rabbit hole along with Alice, and setting up shop among people and animals who are all other than what they seem. It's a fantastic tale, yet written pragmatically. In short, it's a book that starts out in one direction, swerves in another, and by the time you reach the end you feel like a pinball that has bounced among every obstacle in the machine. The initial set-up is deceptively simple. A businessman in a small Vermont town finally tells his wife that it's time they split, since their marriage has gone from stale to toxic. His wife is shocked, even though she has been having an affair. And the man she's been having that affair with...anyway, new characters are brought in and each is connected to the others, and it seems to be playing out like a middle-class, modern Peyton Place - until it turns out the whole thing is a dream. A dream that is shared by all the characters. What does it mean? Who are these people? Why are there a talking chair and a cranky red elephant and a dog who is afraid of carrots involved? See for yourself. I thought this was a TERRIFIC book, even though it's so difficult to pinpoint. It just IS. It is what it is.

A strange, hallucinatory tale that just may be Carroll's best in over a decade

Any regular reader of Jonathan Carroll knows that the seemingly mundane lives of his protagonists will soon become insane, reality-shattering nightmares, and 'Bathing the Lion' is no different. In my opinion, however, it's his most enveloping work since at least 2001's 'The Wooden Sea,' striking that perfect blend of reality and fantasy. Fans of the more tripped-out novels of Murakami and Philip K. Dick should have a decent idea of the type of mind-bender to expect, and Carroll does it just as well -- if not better -- when he's at his best, as he is here. And here he kicks the crazy up a notch.
Five New Englanders are interconnected by sharing the same odd-yet-realistic dream, and soon discover that they were, in another life, "mechanics," cosmic beings who've been fighting against the force of Chaos since time immemorial, and have had their memories wiped. Trust me, it makes more sense once you read it. I think. Part of the fun is discovering and unraveling the mystery along with the characters. It's never dull, always compelling, and feels tightly structured, as opposed to the meandering, "making it up as he goes along" vibe of some past efforts by Carroll, fun as they are. The concept may seem "goofy" on the surface, but if you give in and just go with it, you may find yourself wrapped up in an absorbing journey, one that's an intense page-turner while still touching on some rather intriguing existential concepts.
Anyone who's into surrealistic reality-breakdown stories would be hard-pressed to find much out there as captivating and stupefying as 'Bathing the Lion.' I've been thinking about it for days since I've finished, and nothing else on my bookshelf looks the least bit interesting to me after reading this. They don't seem "far out" enough. Guess that means I'm off to find the few remaining Jonathan Carroll books I've yet to read.
