Sunflowers are bold and bright flowers that have inspired painters and designers for years. Master knitter and designer Kristin Nicholas grows her own field of colorful sunflowers and now brings the iconic sunflower to fiber life using knitting, crochet, felting, and embroidery. Included are designs for over thirty different sunflower blooms and buds in a variety of sizes, plus eight different leaf and vine designs, and a host of critters who live in a sunflower field―from birds and honeybees, to butterflies and caterpillars―a total of fifty items.
Laid out like the previous books in the series, the book includes all the useful information you need for making the flowers―which needles, crochet hooks, embroidery needles, and types of yarns to use, plus a special explanation of how to choose yarn that felts well. In the "How to Work with Color" section, photographs of actual sunflowers are translated into stitched samples that give the reader visual cues on how to combine colors in their crafting. Organized into knitted and crocheted items, with additional instructions incorporated for felting, the "How-To" section includes full step-by-step pattern instructions and charts where appropriate. The last part of the book features over fifteen projects for using the sunflowers in many and varied ways, from embellishing mittens, to decorating a grapevine wreath to a felted potholder, to making a child's toy, and more!

Pretty Motif Designs Representing Classic and Exotic Sunflower Varieties
By Lynne E.
I love sunflowers, but never knew before that sunflowers come in lots of colors--not just yellow and gold. Nor did I know that sunflowers also come with differently shaped seed heads, so that some (e.g., the Giant Sungold) almost look like chrysanthemums!
In 50 SUNFLOWERS TO KNIT, CROCHET, & FELT, well-known designer Kristin Nicholas includes a gallery of sunflowers, leaves, stems, and "small critters" for you to use in in selecting your favorite motifs. The sunflowers are labeled by sunflower variety or motif name (e.g., Giant Sungold, Bobble Beauty). Along with the motifs, the gallery displays coordinating leaf designs (e.g., teardrop-shaped, jagged with bobbled edges). Scattered among the gallery sunflowers are some fun critters (ladybug, honeybee, butterflies, caterpillar, robin, starfish, sea anemone).
Following the gallery, there are row-by-row instructions for making the knitted and crocheted sunflowers. (The instructions for the crocheted sunflowers also include charts.) At the beginning of the book are general instructions that explain the knitting, crocheting, and felting techniques used in the motif patterns. Nicholas has also included an interesting section on choosing and using yarn colors.
My favorite sunflower designs are the Giant Sungold, Big Teddy Bear, Woolly Mammoth, and Tweed Giant, because these seem to be the most naturalistic. (In particular, the Woolly Mammoth and Tweed Giant have realistic leaves curling around enormous seed heads.) However, I like all of the included sunflower designs, and am very much intrigued by the thought of knitting and crocheting sunflowers in red, orange, brown, raspberry, and purple--as well as in yellow and gold.
There are 31 knitted designs: Sunray Swirl, Firecracker, Small Teddy Bear, Crème Caramel, Giant Sungold, Wagon Wheel, Cherry Twizzler, Cocoa Sundrop, Pompom Puff, Joker, Toffee Twist, Woolly Mammoth, Swizzle Sticks, Prairie Gold, Gold Stripe, Sweet Petite, Lazy Daisy, Bobble Beauty, Pompom Gem, Amethyst Queen, Catherine Wheel, Flower Back and Stem, Garter Petals, Concave Petals, Veined Petals, Veined Leaves, Jagged Leaves, Swallowtail Butterfly, Honey Bee, Woolly Bear Caterpillar, and Robin.
There are 25 crocheted designs: Starburst, Little Gem, Picot Star, Moulin Rouge, Big Teddy Bear, Raspberry Ruffle, Sunbright, Sunburst, Flower Back and Stem, Crochet Petals, Teardrop and Toothed Leaves, Purple Passion, Ruby Harvest, Openwork Star, Sea Anemone, Small Bud, Large Bud, Tweed Giant, Lace Sunbeam, Bicolor Gem, Autumn Beauty, Aztec Gold, Starfish, Ladybug, and Monarch Butterfly.
At the end of the book, there are 15 projects for using the motifs: Giant Sunflower Pillow, Farmer's Market Bag (motifs applied to raffia bag), Napkin Rings, Summer Hat (motifs applied to purchased hat), Baby Rattle, Mail Basket (motif applied to woven basket), Teddy Bear Sunflower Brooch, Grapevine Wreath (motifs applied to purchased grapevine wreath), Polka Dot Vase (a glass jar enclosed in a crocheted cover, with stemmed sunflowers inserted in the vase), Potholders (felted motifs applied to potholders made from wool fabric), Sew-On Flower Pillows (motifs applied to purchased pillows), Washcloth, Wall Art (motifs applied to framed sunflower prints), Lampshade (motifs applied to jute lampshades), and Applique Cardigan (motifs applied to purchased sweater).

Retro-1960's
By Southern Review
Based on an excellent experience with one of the author's previous books, I may have been encouraged to read more into the charm of her knitted robins, located in the Amazon "Look Inside" section. They are wonderful to view. The amazing design dexterity of her robins, and her artfully crocheted Monarch butterflies and bumble bees are wonderful. Sadly, they are not craft designs I have call for.
The sunflowers, are also a bit tinny, thin, and lack the voluptuousness of color, texture, and the design quality that I respect from this talented designer. I love southern French themes and think of Vincent van Gogh's sunflowers with their rough beauty, emotional honesty and bold color.
Kristin Nicholas is a color expert - (as am I in the genre of studio painting and full spectrum interior color designs). As such, I am immensely drawn to her extraordinary color expertise. I loved her gregarious and lively design concepts in her Kaffe Fassett-esque, Color by Kristin: How to Design Your Own Beautiful Knits. "Sunflowers", displays less of this color ingenuity and offers a more narrowly defined, subjective, whimsical design index with a 1960's cadence. My taste as an artist and designer, although very broad, eclectic and diverse, struggled to accept these projects as designs I could embrace, or, incorporate into my home. They are excessively playful and whimsical in an off-putting way. Appliquéd yarn flowers on lamp shades, hats, and straw purses seem a bit cliché.
On the eclectic "whimsy" front I would incline more toward some of the designs in this offering: Knitting Art: 150 Innovative Works from 18 Contemporary Artists
This is a nice book, nice photography; just not my personal taste for projects. I would not have bought it in person.
