Peintre, dessinateur, createur industriel, theoricien et photographe allemand, Joseph Albers (1888-1976), considere souvent pour son culte des compositions orthogonales comme un precurseur de l Op art, a mene une double carriere d artiste et d enseignant, d abord au Bauhaus, avec Gropius, Adolphe Meyer et Monholy-Naagy, jusqu a la fermeture de l ecole par les nazis en 1933, puis au celebre Black Moutain College aux Etats-Unis jusqu en 1949, avant d assurer la direction de la section de creation industrielle a l universite de Yale a New Haven.
